Brakes are a safety issue; your car will not stop properly without them.

It’s not clear what your point is with sat-nav; yes they charge for it, just like they charge for every service item, including the brakes.

If you think your brakes are wearing too quickly then lifting off earlier so that you need to brake less will help.

I drive automatics which do tend to eat through pads faster than manuals......
But I am saying that mine need replacement DISKS at the same time as PADS for the simple reason that it is extremely diffcult to check the pad levels without a jack or ramps to catch the pads before they wear down to backing plates and GRAUNCHING starts !
SatNavs are not included on service item lists and are not included in standard service prices !
But you say they're usually done at about 30,000 miles so why not get them checked before that figure?

A jack or a pair of ramps would be quite a bit cheaper than a set of disks ...

Anyone else find that brake disks appear to be treated as service items nowadays?

    (no jack supplied nowadays)

Brakes have always been a service item...

I am not aware of any car supplied without a jack.  No spare wheel, yes, but still a jack.
I would say most new cars are not supplied with a jack as standard. Only if you got for the space saver / full size option

What's the point of jacking a car if you haven't got a spare wheel?
So you can inflate the tyre with the bottle of glue and tyre inflator, then rotate the wheel to spread it around.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Possibly so, but I've bought a number of cars with a bottle of gunk and no spare wheel, and none of them came with a jack.

Also, jacking the car without the handbrake on - to allow the wheel to rotate - probably isn't recommended.

Anyway, the jack question arose in the context of examining the brakes. Even if a jack is supplied for wheel-changing, it's strictly only for that purpose, not for supporting the car while you work underneath it.

That makes no sense. You can still get them checked more frequently if you want.

Why would sat nav be a service item?

The wheels go round when you drive it. No need for a Jack.

I've never yet seen a wheel that you couldn't see the brake pads when you shone a torch, most of my cars had steel wheels with holes about 30mm.
