Anyone else find that brake disks appear to be treated as service items nowadays?
My last 4 new cars all needed new front disks due to pads wearing out at about 30,000 miles
Before anyone says check pads yourself - can't without ramps or jack (no jack supplied nowadays)

Sat Navs should be updated as service items but are generally missed or charged extra £100+

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Brakes are a safety issue; your car will not stop properly without them.

It’s not clear what your point is with sat-nav; yes they charge for it, just like they charge for every service item, including the brakes.

If you think your brakes are wearing too quickly then lifting off earlier so that you need to brake less will help.

Brakes have always been a service item...

I am not aware of any car supplied without a jack.  No spare wheel, yes, but still a jack.

What's the point of jacking a car if you haven't got a spare wheel?

    Must be your driving style.

Updating mapping has to be paid for. Service providers don't do this work for free.

My car had neither when I bought it new. Stored in the space that was, conveniently, the size and shape of a spare wheel, was one of those tubes of gloopy sludge that was supposed to repair a puncture in seconds (and consign the tyre to the dustbin if you took it anywhere to have it properly repaired). I ordered a spare wheel and a jack.

Agree with Toomany, my last two new cars had no spare or jack.but I did get my sat nav updated for free for three years.

Brake discs have become high wear (sacrificial) items since they took asbestos out of brake pads. It's normal to replace discs every other pad change.

I find  brake pads last 50000 miles and discs 100000.

Yep, this is what I've heard - it's the removal of asbestos that's the ultimate culprit.  I know when I was young, discs lasted forever.
However, in every car I've owned (admittedly older and "basic" cars, nothing flashy or expensive), discs are pretty cheap to buy and an absolute doddle to change, so it's no big deal in my view.  If it removes the risk of asbestos dust, I think it's a pretty fair trade-off

I drive automatics which do tend to eat through pads faster than manuals......
But I am saying that mine need replacement DISKS at the same time as PADS for the simple reason that it is extremely diffcult to check the pad levels without a jack or ramps to catch the pads before they wear down to backing plates and GRAUNCHING starts !
SatNavs are not included on service item lists and are not included in standard service prices !
