Our son will be doing what now seems to be an advanced course in college from September which means we will loose entitlement to CTC & CB, we currently claim IS and my partner is currently getting PIP at higher rates, I also claim carers allowance, we live in a 3 bedroom home but do not currently pay bedroom tax due to needing the 3 bedrooms for each of us.

Please can anyone tell me what else will now likely change due to our son leaving non-advanced education but still continuing in full time education for another year, he gets the course free due to still being only 18?

Also what is the situation if our son gets a job and starts earning, how does all this affect bedroom tax, rent and council tax etc?

Many thanks

Apart from child tax credits and child benefit ending, the remainder of your benefits will stay the same. There's no non dependant deductions for your housing benefit because your claims PIP.

Thanks for the reply poppy, so our son doing an advanced course at college wont affect anything other than CTC & CB but what if he was to get a part time job, would that affect us in any way?

    Many thanks for the replies

If he works as well as being a student this won't affect your benefits.

Thats great info poppy, thanks but do you mind answering one more question, what if our son decides not to go to college and gets a fulltime job earning say £400 pw?

Many thanks again for the replies.

Again that won't affect any of your benefits, as previously advised here.

    Hello again poppy

I had a phone call from my sons college tutor, she informed me that the course is not defined as an "advanced/higher course" Its a follow on course from the current year, its not the course you would do before you attend Uni, its the one before that? She said its like doing a gap year course which would equate to a National Certificate? The course name is UAL level 4 professional course in music and is a new course? This is actually going to be his 3rd year in college.

So now she has said that is not an advanced or higher education course but is a "further education course" I'm unsure as to what to do?

I have already informed the child benefit and tax credit departments before this phone call and have a feeling due to the course name they will not accept it being non-advanced even though the tutor specifically stated it wasn't?

Any thoughts on what I should do would be much appreciated, to say I'm confused is an understatement!

    Many thanks

Only up to level 3 will qualify for child benefit and tax credits to continue. See link. https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-16-19

    Hello

This is in England, I will contact his tutor to ask but I'm sure she just said National Certificate not higher and she mentioned it was different due to it being a UAL course? Its all over my head though and I will just confirm with her which one it is.

Do you mind if I ask why?

    Thanks for the replies
