Roaming question

I am looking at getting a sim only with o2 seeing as they are one of the few to still offer inclusive eu roaming. My question is if I sign a 12 month contract and between that time they introduce roaming charges can they start charging me for roaming before my contract is up or would they have to wait until the end of my contract?

  • Yes they can start charging for EU roaming or increase the cost of anything else but you would probably have the right to cancel without penalty. This from their T&C's :

5.4 You can end this Agreement following a price increase without having to pay an Early Termination Charge, if:
    (a) we apply an increase to your Monthly Subscription Charges of more than the RPI Rate plus the additional 3.9% (provided that the 3.9% is only relevant if you signed up to this Agreement on or after 25 March 2021); or
    (b) we increase any of our Out-of-Bundle Charges in a way that would have had the effect of increasing your total bill (based on your historical monthly usage over the previous 12 month period taking into account seasonal usage) by more than 10% if the increase(s) had applied for the whole of a typical month's bill.

Roaming charges are classed as Out-of-Bundle Charges. Quite how they would work out "your historical monthly usage over the previous 12 month period taking into account seasonal usage" if you have less than a year's history with them..........

As above they make the terms difficult to interpret but as they are specifically advertising "We’re the only major network that is not reintroducing EU roaming charges" I would take a screenshot of that incase of any pushback if they do change their terms and you want to cancel. I doubt they would stop you but always better to have extra ammunition.

Three are still including roaming including EU and US with their PAYG SIMs although there is a 12Gb data limit and no tethering just so you are aware.
  • Tesco state that their contracts are fixed for the length of the contract. Inclusive EU roaming included, but not sure if this is also fixed? They have a 12 month contract at £17.50 for 60GB of data, and unlimited calls and messages (and of course they're under o2). This is one I'm eyeing up.

Look at Smarty. They are doing 60Gb for £10pm unlimited calls / txts and EU roaming (12Gb fair use policy). They use Three Mobile network. 1 month contract so worst case you don't get on with it you just leave.

Good deal. Thanks. But not sure how long EU roaming included will last  As Three are stopping it.

I suspect a minority of providers will carry on offering it as a differentiator. A bit like bank cards - most charge for foreign usage, a few don't.

Quite a few providers still offer EU roaming combined with monthly contracts so you can switch to one of those and move on again should they also cease to offer free roaming.

Smarty has already been mentioned above but off the top of my head you can also consider ID mobile (on Three) and Asda mobile (Vodafone) who both offer monthly contracts.

Take a look at Uswitch for competitive ID mobile rates.

Or PAYG. 1pmobile still has free EU roaming.
