In August I took out a contract mobile phone, since then I have lost my job and can't really aford it, does anyone please know how difficult it is to get out of it or should I ring them up and ask what they could offer. I know lots of you are good at this sort of advice.

If it's TMobile, you will need to keep the tariff for 11 months before changing it. For all others you can usually trade down to a cheaper tariff after 6 months. Cheapest tariffs available are usually around £15/month (but rumours abound that Orange might still have a High Speed Data tariff at only £10/month if you can persuade them to switch you onto it).

That's about you best bet...as well as maybe selling your mobile handset for as much as you can, if it's still worth anything significant (say £100+) to offset the cost of the remainder of the minimum term of the contract. You could then use a small fraction of the proceeds of the handset sale to buy yourself a cheap Nokia 3410 for little more than £20-£30 (e.g. from Woolworths/Forward Cellular), unlock it for free online and then place your contract SIM in it if there are any free minutes on your tariff worth making use of until the minimum term passes.

Also with Orange you can't downgrade your tariff for the first six months.

However I think they allow you to "freeze" your tariff for up to six months.

I haven't any information yet as I haven't been able to get through tried several times waited over 15 mins each time!!!!!!! Will try again tomorrow. I think you can pay to get out of the contract and depending on how much it is I am thinking it may be best for me, although I love the phone I got, they will probably want it back :(

I had realised that Orange were ceasing new connections to HSD Tarrif in September. Earlier in the year I downgraded two contracts dating from December 2003, the result of a famous, and still extant thread (http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Urgents;action=display;num=1071857478;start=213#213) on this esteemed board that is still referred to in hallowed terms. When at month five Orange CS were in the process of trying to persauade me not to pay them £5 less per month they said that I could transfer the contract to someone else.

I then had no interest in pursuing that line of action, but now less than three months to go before I ditch the numbers, wonder if the gash HSD contracts have some value towards the end of their brief lives.

Who has experience of transfering a mobile contract from one person to another? Is it worth anything to anyone to be able to pay France Telecom only £10 per month for the privilege of belonging to the Orange Club?
