Hi, just accepted the following tariff from EON Next - seems they are now offering it to at least some customers on the price cap, not just those coming to the end of a previous fix:

    EON Next
    Next Loyalty Fixed v4
    Electricity: 29.98p/kWh, 43.57p/day
    Gas: 7.48p/kWh, 23.08p/day
    12month fix
    Exit fee: £75

Should work out significantly cheaper at least during current price cap (and probably for whole fix) due to my low usage, and therefore the reduced standing charges have a decent impact.

I'd be genuinely interested to know if there is evidence for this stance IF Octopus' ToU "innovative" tariffs are included in the analysis.
Given that an annual cost cannot be calculated for time-of-use tariffs, a standard comparison will never work. Even though Octopus Tracker is technically not a ToU tariff without knowing future daily prices then any comparison will also be useless.

BEIS has produced a software tool that pulls 12 months’ worth of 30 minute usage data from a smart meter and then overlays it over all tariffs. This tool is yet to be taken up by price comparison websites. There is the not insubstantial problem of getting DCC approval to connect to the smart meter network.

It would certainly be interesting if you become aware of the tool being released and could make the source know to us forumites

The Final Report on smart meter tariff comparisons was signed off in January. The ‘tool’ is open source so it is available to everybody.

    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1130644/smarter_tariffs_smarter_comparisons_final_report.pdf#page107

That said, before a price comparison website can make use of the ‘tool’ it will require the consumer’s permission to access smart meter data AND - more importantly - the organisation accessing the data would have to become a DCC Registered Other User or partner with an organisation that holds this accreditation and has access to DCC-certified Adapter software.

It is self evident that a ‘tool’ of this nature is unlikely to be of much help to those on Agile or Tracker tariffs as any future cost comparison has to be based on a tariff with known components such as time periods and unit prices: eg, a smart tariff with 3 periods Peak; Mid-Peak and Off Peak.
  • Offered a fix by Shell energy but no information. You have to click on get deal before it becomes clear. I like to know upfront what I am submitting to.

You should be able to click on get deal without agreeing to the deal.

Standing charges for electricity vary wildly by region.
