Even though I fixed in April I do occasionally check current rates just out of curiosity. EDF's fixed offer today is as follows (Eastern Region, E7 electricity only):

    Day rate: 78.17p
    Night rate: 26.46p
    Daily standing charge 38.00p

78p for day time rate per kw/h is obscene
26.46p for night time, however, is looking quite good. The poster uses 80% night rate, so that's a weighted average of 36.8p/kWh.
True.  Plus the standing charge is not bad. I was taken aback by the day-time rate!

The day rate is pretty grim, especially compared to our last fixed rate of 8/16p which ended on 31st March. The SC on their latest fix is the same as the SVR for the eastern region. Not sure why the SC is relatively low in this region, but it has always tended to be lower than many other regions. I guess maybe network maintenance costs are lower in the east due to the relatively flat terrain and tame weather conditions.

I managed to fix my parents’ very high usage house with Scottish Power for 17.19 Gas & 52.40 Electric a few days ago

I see these have now been pulled, and they are offering no quotes for new customers at all

There is no/hardly any supplier that offers fixed tariffs for new customers, most only offer to existing customers.

So the dreaded time is up for me. My fixed term is coming to an end.

    Currently paying £150 a month with Ovo Energy in the following rates;

    Electricity (Economy 7)
    Peak unit rate
    20.21p per Kilowatt hourkWh
    Off-peak unit rate
    13.93p per Kilowatt hourkWh
    Standing charge
    23.11p a day
    Future annual consumption
    3598 kWh

    Gas:
    Unit rate
    4.45p per Kilowatt hourkWh
    Standing charge
    20.20p a day
    Contract start date
    17th September 2021
    Contract end date
    16th September 2022
    Future annual consumption
    10142 kWh

Being offered a 2 Year 'Exclusive' offer:

    Electricity
    Day unit rate:
    64.51p/kWh
    Night unit rate:
    41.18p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    53.46p/day

    Gas
    Unit rate:
    17.65p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    27.52p/day

£357 a month + £10  boiler cover, which I don't need (not sure if this is option, expect not)

    Alternatively there's 'plans for everyone' and the best deal of the fixed is as follows;

    Plan rates
    Electricity
    Day unit rate:
    64.50p/kWh
    Night unit rate:
    39.61p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    53.46p/day

    Gas
    Unit rate:
    17.49p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    27.52p/day

I'll automatically be put on the variable rate, which at the moment says "£170 per month" but I don't understand how much that is likely to change?

    Plan rates
    Electricity
    Day unit rate:
    30.48p/kWh
    Night unit rate:
    20.03p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    44.84p/day

    Gas
    Unit rate:
    7.28p/kWh
    Standing charge:
    27.22p/day

Every tariff is £30 per fuel early exist, except variable.

I know the forum is littered with these types of questions, but could really do with some advice/guidance from others.

On the face of it, Variable looks great but how much will that change, are any of the deals here worth a punt now, or should I stay variable briefly?

Advantage of fixed rates is the 4% interest on account credit, but this probably pales in comparison to the rate increase anyway.

    Thanks

Here's a data point for Sainsbury's Energy (provided by E.on Next, but the tariffs don't seem to be the same name, at the very least)
    Region: East of England
Electricity: 1 Year Smooth Renew v19 Direct Debit version
    54.01p/kWh 37.92p/day
Gas: 1 Year Smooth Renew v19 Direct Debit version
    13.33p/kWh 27.22p/day
    For an annual usage of:
    Electricity: 1,790 kWh
    Gas: 3,859 kWh
Gives a Direct Debit monthly cost of £143.26
Smart meter tariff, and no exit fee.

    Do you feel lucky?
Variable will increase from the 1st of October, most probably to something similar to the fixes you've been offered. And is expected to rise again in January.
The (one-year?) "plan for everyone" is slightly cheaper than the two-year Exclusive offer, but will put you in this same position next year. We're all hoping prices will fall by then but that's not a given.

I managed to switch to Scottish Power from BG for this deal.
  • Hi everyone,  long time lurker/reader but first post so please bear with me if it doesnt make sense. Im hoping to borrow someone's crystal ball please.

Ive been on SVT with EDF since my previous supplier went bust, we are not mega users, slightly over average for electric, slightly under for gas. I like to pay for what I use as I feel l have a little control that way, if I see usage creeping up we can go easy and bring it back down if needed. I pay full amount monthly by dd.

Recently with all the news and predictions I had a wobble and signed up to a fix - Fix total service August24 - but the prices arent anything to shout about at 57p electric and 17p gas , give or take. Im still in cooling off period.

Does anyone know if Cornwall Insight predictions are going above these sort of amounts? Im not thrilled at being fixed for 2 years with £200 exit fee as so much can happen in that time, especially with new PM.
Im good at budgeting and thinking of going back to SVT (take my chances) and paying full amount monthly as before. I know my winter bills will be huge but the following summer will even it out for me.
I know, I know its all a gamble and no body really knows yet but you lot are so knowledgeable I thought Id ask the general consensus of opinion. Is my fix worth it or do we reckon those prices might come lower than that within 2 years, or extra measures might be brought in?
Thanks for any advice, I really appreciate it.

The latest CI forecast is, in round numbers:
    • October 22: 52p/kWh E, 15p/kWh G
    • January 23: 67p/kWh E, 17p/kWh G
    • April 23: 66p/kWh E, 19p/kWh G
    • July 23: 54p/kWh E, 17p/kWh G
    • October 23: 54p/kWh E, 16p/kWh G
If those turn out to be accurate (which isn't guaranteed) your fix will be cheaper from January and will stay that way until at least July. Depending on how your usage breaks down month-by-month it couldwork out to be worth staying on the fix through the coming winter then paying the exit fee in July. If you have a quarterly (or monthly) breakdown you can do the sums and work it out, or share them here and one of us can do it for you.
When exactly does your cooling off period end? We're expecting Ofgem to announce the October cap late next week, so if you can stretch it that far you'll have more info to go on.
