Ethernet Card

Please help, computer illiterate !!

I have just had virgin media installed in my house. TV, Phone and Broadband. the problem I am having is with the Broadband. The engineer put in the cables etc and left me a disc to install into my laptop, along with an ethernet cable.

I ran the disc as advised waiting until it was installed to plug in ethernet cable, as advised, but my laptop is stating that I require an ethernet card ?!?.

Thought it was just a case of install and go. The laptop is only 6 weeks old and hasn't been used until I tried to install Virgin.

Can anyone advise what an ethernet card is and where to get one. And is this something a computer illiterate can install themselves or do I have to go to a technical wizard ie PC shop ?

Ethernet card is also known as a network card and should be already on your laptop.

If you look at the back and the two sides (not the front normally) you should see the enternet port it normally has a line with two dots on one side while one on the other..

PS it also normally has two lights on it and is around 1cm by 1cm big.

Make/model? Do you have a socket like this?

It may need to be enabled.

  • Will look when I get home. How do I enable it if it does have this already ? I know these are probably the most idiotic questions but I have no clue . Its a Samsung R something plus I think.

  • My brother had the same problem with his last week. YOu need to do a manual install. If you call Virgin Media help line they will guide you through it and they credit you for the call charges if you ask them to.

It's not necessary to install any ISP software when using Ethernet. Personally I would un-install the Virgin software and just plug it into the router.

  • I called Virgin and explained that the laptop was asking for an Ethernet Card and they advised me to go to Argos or PC World to get one !

When i did my brothers over the phone there was nothing to install. I had to do it through internet explorer but can't remeber the IP address i had to use. It was very easy and quick to do though.

If you have an Ethernet Port which most new laptops have you don't need to buy one. Sounds like you got a unhelpfull Virgin Media Call Centre person  Which is why so many people are leaving them

I had an issue the other night when the disk would run at all on a laptop. Instead, I read through the user manual, and there is a http address that you can type in your browser and it takes you straight to the virgin website to register. His was running xp wasnt able to use the disk as it said that he didnt have enough memory installed.............rubbish.
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
