Can anyone recommend a reliable CCTV System which can be viewed on a mobile, has at least 8 cameras, can read number plates which are 6 or 7 metres away, has reasonable night vision but doesn't cost any more than £1,000?

To fit yourself or to be fitted for you? You've listed a lot of 'wants' for the budget - particularly if you want it fitted.

    8 cameras - Yes - easily achievable
Mobile - Yes - easily achievable - dependent on whether it's a fitted price or a DIY price
Read number plates - Daytime - yes - night-time not easily without specialist cameras

How about hard drive space? How long do you want it to keep the images for?

Do you want constant recording or movement detected recording?

    Do you want alerts?

How wide an area does each camera intend to cover? (To rear numberplates either the vehicle must get close to the camera - or the camera focal length needs to be longer - longer focal length means less in the picture)

Is this for your home or your business?

Is power consumption a factor for you?
  • I have a Reolink system and it works perfectly

I am hoping my husband will fit it.

I would be happy if the images were kept for 4 weeks.

    I would prefer constant recording.

    I would prefer alerts.

I don't have a clue about width needed as our current system is so old and needs replaced.  We live in the countryside so probably a combination of width to see what is going on but also able to read number plates.

    It is for our home.

No, but obviously the less power it uses the less expensive it will cost to run.

I have only started to read this but I do not want to spy / watch my neighbours.  We are lucky to have brilliant neighbours on the entire road.  If they see anything which is out of character they will tell us and we do the same for them.  In fact one neighbour was able to tell us that a vehicle had parked outside ours at a certain time; the make, model and registration of the vehicle; the number of minutes they were there, that the only occupant of the vehicle was wearing gold rimmed glasses, the colour of his hair, etc.  When they were still there 10 minutes later she got her husband to drive past in one of his vehicles, 10 minutes after that she got her son to drive past in his van and then she drove past in another vehicle.  She watched until the person left. One of their business is at their own home.

There has been a few thefts on the road we live on so we thought we would update the current cctv system so we could see what is happening at ours when we are out.  One day we were out someone had opened our gate, as the latch was not the way we left it, so it would have given us peace of mind if we had been able to rewind the cctv to see what happened and who it was.

He fitted my parents CCTV.  They can watch their CCTV on their mobiles.

I didn’t get around to getting the new cctv system ordered. However within the past month we did have an unwanted visitor who stole from outside our property but the police have recovered our stolen property. He also stole from the neighbour and he stole from a few other places nearby but not everyone’s property has been recovered so we were lucky.

We had another incident since but luckily nothing was stolen that time.

A friend has a cctv system and one of these cameras which they recommended,

“Reolink 5MP PTZ WiFi Security Camera Outdoor, 5X Optical Zoom, 190ft Full-Color Night Vision, 2.4/5GHz WiFi Camera with Human/Vehicle Detection, Auto Tracking, 360° View, 2-Way Audio, IP66, RLC-523WA” so we have ordered two of them. We now need to order the rest of the cctv system.

Has anyone any recommendations which cameras would be best? Also are the cctv cameras better with or without lights?
