Why did John Lewis Partnership card refuse my request for an increased limit?

I took out the JLP card in the summer of 2021 with a  credit limit of £500 , each month I have made the minimum payment or paid off in full on time. 6 months ago I got a new job where I work more hours and my salary increased significantly. I requested to increase my credit limit to £1500 however this has been declined, what would be the reason for them declining it ?

They're not comfortable with the risk you represent.

You've only had the card for less than a year and not always clearing in full. Work on always paying it off (that goes for any other cards you have, unless on a 0% promo).

As above.  When deciding credit limits, there's a whole host of factors that are taken into account, not just salary.  But not paying in full every month is almost certainly not helping matters - the view they will take is that you're struggling to service the limit you already have, so they will understandably be reticent to increase the limit further.

If you can pay in full over the next 6 months - you'll likely be in a stronger position. You could also look at other available cards if it's been over 6 months since your last application. You could try the eligibility checkers directly on bank websites (don't use comparison sites) - and if one that appears attractive gives a thumbs up or a 'highly likely' - you could try ONE application to see if you're successful. Do you have a credit card with your main current account holding bank?

If your credit limit was/is £500 then I would suggest you only borderline obtained the card as that is very much a starter credit limit.

As others have said, pay in full for six months and try again if desired.

Were you actually wanting to purchase something that cost more than £500?
