Include copies of the paperwork that shows you could not make a claim on the insurance. Request that in light of the circumstances- the ticket supplier refund for your tickets .
EDIT: having thought about this I realise it might not be as simple as I thought. I use an over 60 oyster card, before oyster cards were introduced and before I reached the correct age I used a yearly season ticket- so if I had been dependent on only one route to attend something that was cancelled I would not have had cancelled tickets as I would have been using a pre paid pass anyway. in that instance I could not have ever produced any evidence to say a train I had intended to travel on was cancelled.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I believe that if you join the Raildar website they maintain statistics of cancelled and delayed trains, but I don't know how far they go back.
You might also be able to get confirmation from your local station, especially if you make clear that you are not seeking compensation for them, simply making an insurance claim.
I think also that if rail was your only travel option due to mobility or other issues you would need to check the small print to see whether that was covered, and possibility also provide proof (for instance, if you check that the National Express / the bus replacement service would have been inaccessible? Of course it's not true for all, but some buses and coaches are now wheelchair accessible, for example
