    I would also raise the socket further up the wall. Depending on the amount of slack in the cables, a minimum of 50mm. If there is no slack, then run new lengths of cable and move the socket up so that it is at least 300mm off the floor (or at least the same height as the other sockets in the room).
    Even on a party wall, there shouldn't be any problem cutting a recess for a steel back box - Messy work, but with the right tools, it doesn't take long.
