No help I'm afraid, but as smart meters support remote disconnection, it should be possible for the supplier to request that Capita send the signal with a single mouseclick, then another mouseclick at Capita, so the admin for that can't be more than a couple of hundred quid- still more than the 50p a day sc though.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

You can request your supplied comes out to disconnect the electric by pulling the main fuse. However the MPAN will then be de energised & you will need a private electrician to do a safety check & issue you with an Icert before you can get reconnected again. You will also possibly need to pay for the disconnection/reconnection so what you save in the standing charge will be eaten up by other costs
As suppliers are not responsible for main fuses then that will be an interesting conversation. Main fuses are part of the Grid and DNOs retain responsibility for the local electricity infrastructure. Smart meter installers have delegated powers to allow them to pull the main fuse during a smart meter installation, or to re-boot a communications hub. They carry approved security seals. My understanding is that if the meter remains in place then the standing charge will continue to be applied. The supplier is still required to carry out safety checks and monitor remaining meter certificated life.

If the MPAN  is rescinded then one could reasonably conclude that reconnection would be treated by the DNO/supplier as a new connection.
Sorry but you’re wrong. Supplier would come out to disconnect, flows sent to de energised MPAN & meter stays in situ. No standing charge paid while disconnected & private electrician needed to confirm internal supply still safe before supplier would come out to reconnect again. Whether they would or not us a different matter

You may want to investigate whether there are any fixed tariffs that offer lower standing charges that will work out better for your overall. Particularly if the 6 months you tend to be away are over warmer months when higher unit prices will be less of an issue.

I can't find any tariffs that have a high unit rate and no standing charge. They used to exist but it seems like that escape route is narrowing fast.

No standing charge isn't an option any more, and given the level of the cost recovery being levied via the standing charge it isn't hard to see why.
You can find tariffs with lower standing charges though, but zero is too much to hope for.

I don't think there are any. What I said was 'lower' standing charges, not zero.

Why not tell them you want to end your contract when you leave and when you come back set up a new contract. Better than disconnection.

You can't just terminate the contract without terminating the physical supply and removing the meter...
You can terminate by switching to another supplier of course, but that doesn't help...
