@johnwb89 The fact that the meter display isn't working may not necessarily mean that it's not recording your usage, and it may be possible to extract the correct info from the optical port.
However if you were then hit with a massive bill you could legitimately claim that you shouldn't be liable for more than the usual amount because SP's poor service meant that you had no warning of excessive consumption.

Thanks a lot guys for the info. I'm glad others have had issues with them!

IF it's a "modern" meter - if it's an old mechanical one - no chance !!

Sorry if I was being confusing. We get Gas to the house fine, but the credit meter has been stuck on 203 since Sept. it wont go up. I totally agree that it's down to SP. I've been trying to help them to no avail.
I was a meter reader for 20 years working for Scottish Power and many others and only found a few mechanical gas meters which had stuck readings.
One guy had free gas for donkeys years but it ended when I heard the old imperial meter make a clicking noise when I was reading it. He told me the truth that the reading never went round and just left it to EDF to bill him on exactly what the meter was showing .
EDF just assumed that he was one of these people who never used gas .
He was nt back billed even though he never reported that the meter was faulty but was nt too happy the next time he saw me knowing that his decade of free gas central heating/cooking  was over .
EDF have nt lost anything as the gas was nt theirs in the first place .They are like Scottish Power in every way being not concerned in the slightest about fraudulent unbilled gas or electric as they both do not run much of a Revenue Protection Unit .
Exactly the same thing happens with blank screen digital electric meters where customers go for years on estimated bills but can use as much as they like and use electric heating and not bother much with their GCH
.EDF and Scottish Power just can t be bothered to sort these faulty meters out .

i ve found lots of digital gas meters with faulty or blank screens and many more digital electric meters with blank screens
.I agree it could be possible to recover the readings but in practice I ve never heard of anyone getting bitten by a true reading back billing through recovery of the  reading .
Its quite a big prepay  gas meter fiddle removing the battery so occupier gets un metered gas   .Where ever I ve found that to have happened the suppliers estimate on previous usage and add the debt on a new prepayment meter rather than extract the true reading.
Personally I d love to see that happen .Maybe they just can t be bothered and its too much trouble to recover the reading

    It's a smart meter apparently:

I have a smart meter which British gas installed in March 21. The electric feeds in but the gas doesn't, so... Yeah. There's also no appointments for a new meter, or equally anyone to come look at my meter at all.

I wonder if the IHD or Bright app is showing anything?
