Does it matter what it is called?

The OP paid money and didn't get the goods.

Doesn't matter what it's called, does matter what it is.   If it was a scam the OP would be unlikely to get their money back - as someone setting up a deliberate scam would shift the money as soon as it landed in the target account and cover their tracks.   If it's just some chancer / inconsiderate person then it'll probably still be sat there.

And a good warning to ALL people that Faster Payments do not always go straight through & can take till the end of the next working day to go through.
On weekend this can affect far more banks. As their systems do not always work in real time at weekends.

Around here anything done with FP would be accpeted as dopne with proof you did it, not waiting for the seller to have it show up.

This is the first time I have heard of people doing it that way. If they can see you have done it no problem, they should also know your name and address though.

Of course use cash if you are not prepared for any of that.

  • Yeah, I showed him that the payment went through on my Hsbc app and he still wasn’t convinced. The bank has blocked his and account and now he has started to message me asking me to tell my block to unblock it and that he can’t give me the laptop and will give the money back. He is speaking as though it’s not him, he is saying it’s his brother, but thats bs.

I told the scan team at Hsbc the situation and they said they will not be removing the allegation towards his account however, he can request his bank to send the funds back even if he’s blocked, but he is saying he can only contact that team through email which is bs i think, he said it will take 24 hours to get a response on email to send the funds back into my account, it’s been almost 2 days since then. My bank also said there is a government fraud fund that may fund me if I don’t get my money back from him. Until then his account is blocked.

maybe being cautious - there has been a lot of press about "fake banking app" particularly around high value goods

And rightly so to be fair. I wouldn't let anything out of my possession until I saw the payment hit my account.

@shiraz99 I understand so that’s why I said to him I’ll come tomorrow or day after once the money comes in, the next day once my bank confirmed it has gone to his, he ignored me for a whole week, saw my messages too.

If watching you do it (so obviously in a real app) is not enough then you are making scams easy so should not accept it.
Good enough for any business around here why is it not good enough for you. (and like I said both parties should provide passport/driving licence details or whatever).
