Sadly there are people who fall through the net, no one should in a civilized society choose between food and heat. No one should be homeless. Until everyone has enough food to eat, be able to have a place to call home (whether its just a small bedsit) and able to heat there homes reasonably, then I cant see how we are civilized and caring society.

Of course some people through there selfish acts gambling, taking drugs, alcohol may find themselves on the street, however people like need help not scorned upon
  • That old lady needed help with her benefits (I'm not denigrating the person's generous gesture, I'd probably have done something similar myself). But the fact remains, she should have more money than £60 to live on. AFAIK, a single person without savings should have around £130 and their rent and Council Tax paid.

(of course she may have had savings and chosen not to use them - you never know).

I hope someone has now helped her to claim what she is entitled to.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Unfortunately, the days of a British government protecting the interests of it's own citizens first are long gone, and with Mr Brown all but signing the country's right to govern itself away a few weeks ago, things will only get worse. The country has been literally sold down the river without so much as the much-promised referendum on EU reform being offered to it's citizens, because the government must have known it would have been on a hiding to nothing. This is the same reason why Brown didn't call a snap election shortly after he came to office.

The current administration knows it can get away with virtually anything and there is nothing anybody can do, the problem is I'm not sure Cameron will fair any better.

No, Cameron will not. Nor will Clegg. That's why I'm a member of the English Democrats Party whose motto is 'Putting England First'.

We still have a certain amount of freedom what to do with our own money, and if we choose to give to local charities rather than to foreign countries, we still can.

    Hi all,

I've found that one simple way to reduce your bills is to call your supplier and find out whether or not you are on the cheapest tariff. Online tariffs are usually the cheapest and some people may find they can save upto 20% a quarter just by switching tariff. Also your supplier may give you an additional discount if you agree to pay by monthly direct debit.

Also, try using a price comparison site (Martin Lewis recommends ENERGYHELPLINE). they will tell you who is the cheapest supplier in your area.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, we got the boiler replaced last January because I'm on Attendance Allowance (which is not means-tested). Saved us £2,700 and has cut our gas usage in half. Lovely warm house, sensitive and easily-programmable controls, hot water instantly on tap, fantastic.

  • Make fire bricks! Save all newspapers (I only get the free ones thru the door) dampen them with water and squeeze out the excess - there is a gadget you can get to do that but it costs around £20 - allow them to dry out thoroughly and hey presto :T you've got an alternative to logs! They work a treat and cost virtually nil - can't be bad.

    Give them a try!
