We have a Hotpoint F/F too, and it did the same thing at times - found our beers were froz rather than just chilled.
I just knocked the temp up a notch and it's been fine since.
I guess the temp indicator isn't as accurate as it should be, but it makes sense to check it with a reliable therm as you also don't want it too warm.
Both fridge and feez sections seem to be fine, tho'.
Now, the range of noises it makes as it goes through its cycles is another matter...
The temp is up to max. We've got a thermometer now and it's reading 0° at the moment.

    As 'high' as it'll go?
Summat badly wrong, then. Time to call Hotpoint. Not fit for purpose.
Does your thermometer go low enough for the freezer temps too? If so, I think it would be useful to know what temp the freezer is at. See if it tallies with what is displayed by the machine itself.

Apologies if this is a silly suggestion, but have you double checked you're turning the dial the right way?  I can never remember whether the higher number means the temp is warmer, or whether it means the fridge runs harder making it colder.  A look at a random Hotpoint fridge manual suggests that higher number = colder fridge, although whether it's the same across all models I have no idea!

the higher the number on the dial the harder the fridge works - therefore the lower the temperature

As above. 'Max' usually means maximum cooling rather than maximum temperature.

Thanks all. Over the last few days the temp has been OK but now it's down to 0°. We're going to try switching the temp gauge to be min now and see what happens throughout the day. It's driving me mad!
