Thief broke quarter window glass: Road-worthiness and Insurance

I have a Yaris 2008. Last night, I realised that a thief had broken the quarter window glass:

I contacted the police and got a crime reference number. For the time being, I covered the window with a liner and duct tape.

I have three questions:
  1. Road Worthiness: Can this car be driven with a bin liner on the window while the glass is being replaced? Would it be considered NOT roadworthy? Any chance of a Fixed Penalty Notice?

  2. Insurance: I can call the insurer (Admiral) to claim a repair, but I don't know what category of claims this will be about (like a windscreen claim, or a typical accident claim?). Does it jeopardise the NCD?

  3. Fitting: Can I fit a glass (such as this one) myself if I order it? I can only stick the new glass to the car using glue, but I'm unsure of the quality of a DIY repair.

    1) Yes although your car is less secure than normal so you need to get it fixed as soon as possible. Not least to prevent excess rain getting into the vehicle. Or people getting in.

    2) Normally a glass claim doesn’t touch your no claims bonus. You need to check your policy to see if you are covered and the excess. I suspect your repair might not cost much more than the excess anyway. Possibly less.

    3) Not entirely sure what you mean by glueing a glass pane onto the car but it sounds a bad idea. The window needs fitting properly into the seal as that ensures your car is weather proof. So yes you can do it yourself but I’d suggest you don’t in this case and get it done by one of the many glass replacement companies out there.

Am I the only one who has often wondered if the many glass replacement companies out there could be responsible for some of the broken glass?

When I needed a windscreen on a yaris, I contacted a local independent windscreen chap.  The cost was less than my glass excess, so I never bothered claiming.

Probably, noone else seems to be that bitter or jaded.

Given how busy glass repair companies are anyway, and how the repairer is usually dictated by the insurance company, it seems like a pretty terrible business model to pay someone to go breaking windows in a random enough pattern to avoid it being obvious.

Also; tyre companies aren't lining the streets in nails either. The employees still need to drive home.

What a bizzare (sorry, stole the word from a previous post) illogical and badly thought out post!

There was a time when almost every advert on prime time TV was for car glass repairs. I just wondered how all this glass got broken.

You mean the same way that firefighters are responsible for some fires or ambulance crew are responsible for some 'accidents'

In our city we had a real problem with someone glueing locks of shops and businesses.  Went on for about 6 months until they caught the guy.      He was a locksmith.
