As for him smelling - do you brush him regularly? Has he had a recent vet check up?? It could be his mouth, or it could even be something like impacted anal glands that need emptying.

You also mentioned one of his fangs has broken - have you had this checked out, in case there is a nerve exposed.

Thanks... his fang was broken long before I inherited him - the previous owner seemed very caring and said he'd been to the vet regularly, so I assume he's fine. It certainly doesn't seem to have bothered him over the last 2 years!

I do brush him - I wouldn't say "regularly", though, probably once or twice a month, more in malting season.

He last went to the vet at the end of November (three times!!!). I'm not very experienced with vets, but I didn't feel like they really did a proper checkup, just took him out of his basket and said "he's OK" . I had to point out that one of eyes was discharging, at which point they said "cat flu", then a week later I took him back because he had a visible ulcer in his eye which they then gave me antibiotics for and a follow-up appointment.

If he has cat flu......my god you would know about it, and he would more than likely need a lot of treatment...!!
An eye discharging is not cat flu...i dont like the sound of you vets - do you have any others close by you could take him to?

This one is 15 yards from my house and, ignoring that, is popularly recommended as "the best vetinary practice within 20 miles".

I'm still not convinced his eye is back to normal health either (despite what the vet said) - I'm going to have to take him back again (is it reasonable to visit the vet and pay for 4 appointments in 8 weeks?).
