He is a gorgeous cat and clearly much loved! How about getting that cat flap put in as his Christmas pressie, it only costs about £10 to get someone to do it. Arthritis is horrible for cats, especially such a playful one and left out in the freezing cold his poor joints can easily seize up. I see you have a pale carpet with a black cat, naturally my carpet is dark and my moggies are all pale, shed cat fur has a knack of finding places to show up to it's best advantage, little monsters! I'm also puzzled about the smell - do you mean his litter tray? If so, you'll soon find that once he has a cat flap he'll prefer to go outside. Happy Christmas Badgerlady and Tufter-Puss.x0

Well if it was me I would get rid of your very rude visitors. Personaly if anyone commented on my home smelling of cat(and we have 7) they would very quickly be ex friends, and IMHO no great loss. I am delighted that your faithful cat is now not being shut out in the cold. Give me a cat any day over picky and impertinant "friends." (DH fully agrees with me)

Thanks Maria!
I genuinely don't know why he smells so much (as mentioned previously, I think it's something you get used to unless you sniff around for it).
The litter tray is obviously one source (despite regular cleaning etc), but he does smell like a dog himself, too! I've given him baths before now, which make a significant difference, but it's not good for their fur to do it regularly.
It's also amazing - I came back yesterday after only 2 days away and the black fur is everywhere, particularly on my bed and the futon downstairs.
But, at the end of the day, Tufter's very much worth it!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Has he had a dental check recently? Teeth and gum problems are a major cause of smelly cats. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

He didn't have great teeth when I got him - he's got a proper pair of fangs but one of them was broken off already, and I don't think he cleans them properly (I give him biscuits regularly, but he doesn't often eat grasses etc).
But his body smells, too - you can only really tell when you pick him up and bury your nose in his side, but he definitely smells like a dog
I thought it was cos he was an old man (I've only ever had girls before).Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Our boy cat is alot smellier than our girls ever were. He'll wash himself like they do but he is rather lazy0

Bad gums in particular can make cats really stink, it does come from all over them, not their mouth, which is why it often gets missed. It's allmost like they are sweating it out, I don't know why though. It would definitely be worth mentioning it to the vet next time he has a check up.When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

im glad your letting your cat stay in now, where i used to live the next door neighbours used to leave their cats out a lot of the day and and all night and they always used to come in to mine to keep warm, don't think its fair on them especially when its freezing. My dog doesn't like going out in the coldMarried 09/09/090

I have a cat flap so my two cats can decide for themselves when to go out. In the summer they both spent most of the time outside but now they only really seem to go outside to do their business. In fact one of the cats (an oriental) seemed so relucant even to do that especially if it was wet or very cold that we have put a litter tray back in the house. He really does seem to feel the cold - he is pretty skinny (that is his breed) and not very thick fur.The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0

So glad you are letting hm stay indoors now, he must have been so chilly
As for him smelling - do you brush him regularly? Has he had a recent vet check up?? It could be his mouth, or it could even be something like impacted anal glands that need emptying.
You also mentioned one of his fangs has broken - have you had this checked out, in case there is a nerve exposed.
