Sorry 'only banking password' should have read online banking password.0

Thanks, that's pretty odd as with the 9 characters and two 'non visible' ones so to speak it worked.
I will look into what you say, as it would make more sense in terms of interface design for sure!1 -
Try updating the app, login is now with a six digit numerical passcode rather than the old 6-9 digit alpha-numerical passcode.0

Note there is a difference between HSBC app, and HSBC UK app (they have been separated). My experience with the HSBC UK app is reasonably positive as it sounds is the case for others (face id, now numerical password etc).
The "old" HSBC app (I think this is used if you're an international customer?) is poor, and the ratings in the app store seem to reflect the difference between the two.Peter

Once installed and functioning, an app will work anywhere (when you have connection).

UK one worked for me in France last week (for what its worth). I'm still offered the "other / old" one (that I used to be told to use).
But back to OP - are you using the latest UK version do you know, or an older one/version? That said, HSBC's app is still not on the level of features of some of the fintech ones.
