A.J.Bell - You invest platform - OK?

I'm thinking of opening a platform with A.J.Bell, opinions would be welcome on how you have found it.

It will hold about £50K in ISA account, largely funds.

AJ Bell are a large, stable and profitable FTSE 250 company.

I have been a client of theirs (YouInvest) for a few years now and overall very happy with their service, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

The 0.25% platform fee is quite competitive but be aware there is a list of extra possible charges . Most will probably never apply to you, but watch out for £1.50 charge for every fund purchase if you are buying regularly. Also if there is no cash in the account and they have to sell investments to pay their monthly fees there is a charge for that - £10

AJ Bell are a capable company however at low valuations they still charge a trade fee for everything (except their own funds) and at higher valuations their capping is limited and usually not the cheapest. So rarely the best value option but if you're not as price sensitive then they are a solid choice.

They are not the cheapest. Their SIPPs were, however, very competitively priced (provided you do not use open ended funds) when I used them. Their customer service was better than that of most brokers, and I have used a lot of them over the years.

The AJ Bell platform is fine, but AJ Bell the company has a history of ... well, let's just say being somewhat uncompromising and mealy-mouthed when it comes to certain aspects of customer service.

As for the charges, £50k in funds will cost you £125/year in platform charges at AJ Bell, increasing as your portfolio grows, and £1.50/trade. Or, you could use Lloyds Sharedealing Direct (one of Halifax's alter-egos, the others being iWeb and HSDL) and pay a flat £40/year for the platform and the same £1.50/trade.

The spread achieved is part of the cost also

Is AJ bell running YouInvest then.   I think they give cashback maybe

Yes the platform is OK but the company has become too greedy over the years. I recommend ii over AJ Bell.
