I have return flights booked with Ryan Air. The outbound flight has been cancelled today, over 14 days beforehand on 6/6/22. Ryan Air have offered a refund of the outbound flight only. My initial flight booking on the 3/3 has already been cancelled leaving no viable near alternative.
Do I have a chance of claiming for both flights and what is the best path to approach this?
Normally cancellation of one leg of a return booking is sufficient to warrant a refund for the whole booking if it's all on one itinerary number, but it's unclear what your reference to your initial booking on 3/3 is about, was that a separate one that had to be rescheduled to 6/6?

Not in my recent experience, I've booked two return trips with them this year and in each case have a single reservation reference covering both legs....
  • easyJet cancelled our flight less than 4 hrs before departure this morning - we were actually driving to Bristol airport and had travelled 60 miles when the text arrived! We rebooked a flight for Thursday (only alternative) but, due to it being 'last minute' we've lost our pre-booked parking (£85), driven 120 miles (return) for nothing, wasted 2 days car hire and 2 days hotel accommodation. easyJet website doesn't have any options for claiming back these sort of losses and doesn't offer any sort of 'free text' option in which I might be able to describe/claim these sort of losses. Trying to call them is a joke so what to do? Anybody have any (sensible) suggestions ??

you would make a claim for cancellation of the flight - https://www.easyjet.com/en/claim/EU261
hotel, car hire etc would be a claim from your travel insurance

You can claim for "expenses" on this form: https://www.easyjet.com/en/claim/welfare. Give it a try; there's not much to lose. But you may be more successful charging for the cost of rebooking these things.

When EJ cancelled our flights with 12 hours notice the alternative they were offering was 2 days later. So we scrambled to book Ryan flights later the same day from a different airport, further away. We successfully claimed the extra cost of the Ryan flights (which was 4 times what we paid EJ) and for the taxi to the airport. I rather expected a protracted argument, but they were very reasonable. (We also got the compensation.)

The airline has to pick up any additional expenses incurred ( For example if you had to book a hotel stay for between now and Thursday ) .
Losses - things you already have paid for but can’t use will be an insurance claim . As these are considered “consequential losses”. Check if your insurance covers abandoned departure .

Depending on the reason for cancellation- you can claim a set amount of compensation. What reason did they give ?

Is there a travel insurance that offers some sort of cover for this sort of thing?
Paying for an alternative flight with another airline for example.

Yes - there are some insurance policies like Nationwide Flexiplus which cover abandonment of departure- however they won’t pay out for something that you can claim from the airline .
When a flight is cancelled, the airline should offer the option of a refund or alternative flight . If it’s a last minute cancellation you may be entitled to claim compensation from the airline in addition.

Has anyone else have experience of waiting times for EU261 claims from KLM?

We had a flight time change of 24 hours with less than 14 days notice in early April, and lodged the claim on 11 April after our trip.  2 months on - no progress at all.  I have a tracking number, but 2 months on the status of it remains "we have received your claim and will deal with as soon as possible".  AFAIK it was a resource issue on KLM's side rather than any type of runway closure or strike action.

I know KLM are having a nightmare with cancellations at Schiphol over the last few months, and am beginning to wonder how many months we'll have to wait.
