We need a proper push for smart meter rollout which would oblige suppliers to get this stuff fixed but I think it will be far from a priority right now so our energy supply will remain dated. :(
The "push" is all about installations - seems to me that NOBODY in the supplier universe cares whether they work or not. The default is always "read the meter manually" !!

I dont consider that a push, a push would be mandatory installations with a target date for 100% coverage, and a requirement for suppliers to keep them working as they should. :)

The ombudsman is correct. Legally you must be provided with a meter that accurately records your usage. Yours does, so it is not faulty in that sense.

Neither watchdog nor your MP will be able to do anything about it.
That seems to be the message I'm getting, but it flies in the face of common sense. If you define what a smart meter is as stated by the government and suppliers plus definition of the word 'faulty' it's a 100% slam dunk.
Instead I am trapped by idiotic rules where English language and common sense mean nothing.
I refuse to wait till June 2025.

An MP could potentially push for a change of law or change of remit for Ofgem which would in turn potentially affect the ombudsman.  But its very unlikely to do anything in the short term.

The next step if you not happy is going legal but if the supplier has no obligation in your contract to provide a smart meter then this will fall flat on its face,  I do agree its a bit comical calling a smart meter not faulty when its smart functions are broken.  Its a bit like saying a oven is working fine when the thermostat is broken because you can manually turn it on and off to maintain temperature.

We need a proper push for smart meter rollout which would oblige suppliers to get this stuff fixed but I think it will be far from a priority right now so our energy supply will remain dated. :(
The chocolate fireguard Ombudsman implied many times that this is a huge issue, many thousands affected.
No-one knows what my problem is Electric Meter? Gas Meter? Hub? IHD? HAN? WAN?
EDF have the means to fix this but have told the ombudsman equipment change does not guarantee a fix so they won't do it.
I reject this as nonsense. With that kind of attitude no smart meters would ever be installed because  'they might not work'.
In a site that was working fine for 2.5 years should have no issues UNLESS there has been some network change or faulty firmware that screwed up WAN communication. If that has happened I have not been able to find evidence.
  • When I contacted the ombudsman they asked what I had done to try and resolve my issue with the supplier and then they took on the complaint. I won my case and Bulb had to replace my electric meter and give me compensation. This took around 2 months to complete but as soon as the electric meter was replaced both the electric and gas meters started sending readings to Bulb and so far all is ok. Been sending readings for about 4 months now. So if your meter does not display any readings so you cannot send in manual readings then keep pushing and keep all email correspondence. Don’t ring them as you cannot use it as evidence. Good luck

If the meter cannot be read to give meter reading get back in touch with the ombudsman stating that you cannot give meter readings and any estimated readings by the energy company are likely to be more than the actual usage for any month they estimate readings.
Someone please tell me what money is

I can still do manual readings. Sounds like some have had much bigger problems than me. Maybe when we have power cuts the system will have more resets that may actually do something (previous pull fuse test did nothing).
That gives a thought, if the meters have a small back up battery will a pull fuse test actually do anything? Is there an alternative reset method, like holding down buttons for several seconds..like on a PC which has frozen?

Yes..I would love an electric meter which was blank and unable to record usage .I would nt be at all bothered about suppliers not rushing to replace it neither..it would make my winter gas bill next to nothing !
To me it's no big deal if the meter is smart or dumb given how simple it is to send in a manual reading.
The OP has just got to forget it's supposed to be a smart meter .It's a meter and the Ombudsman is quite right..
