yes if I could get a reading
sent eon msg with video attached they said the meter was dead have tried pressing the buttons as asked by eon to no avail
You'll just be charged whatever the "mysterious third party" thinks you've used over that period, it certainly won't be free and could well work to your detriment.

Why are you asking Eon to READ your meter when they should be REPLACING it?

That's actually a very good point if the meter hasn't been working rather than simply not displaying.  The best/worst they will manage is an estimate of usage based on the same period last year.

I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago with Scottish Power.  We moved into a house and topped up the pre-pay meters.  The gas meter registered the top up, but for the next two years never went down, not even by a penny.  We repeatedly reported the issue, and numerous times people were supposed to be comming out to change the meter but never turned up.

When we eventually moved out, they tried to charge us for two years worth of standing charge.  They wouldn't listen to us, that we'd repeatedly reported the issue until it went to the ombudsman - eventually they accepted they should have changed the meter and it was their own fault.

If the meter really isn't recording using *at all*  then all they can do is estimate.  This may work in your favour, or it could work against you (depending on your actual usage).   If they have to resort to an estimate and you have genuine reason to think you've been using less than average (e.g. the house has been empty for a period, etc) then it would be reasonable to expect them to adjust your estimate downwards (this is a fault with their device after all).

Paying for just the standing charge and no usage for 2 years of gas sounds like a bargain and i can't beleive you tried to argue it was unfair for you to even pay that!.

We had this problem when we moved to a new-to-us house last year, apparently the meters have a battery in them that dies after 7 years approx and is not user replaceable (or even technician replaceable in our case from what I was told, so the whole meter had to be replaced). So much for saving the whale. Unfortunately I can't say what happens if the supplier refuses to expedite the replacement.
