Faster Payments - Barclays to Santander

Hello
On Sunday, I will be picking up a puppy and I have told the breeder that I will make payment via my Barclays app to her Santander account.
She wants to see the money arrive in her account before I leave with the puppy which is fair enough.
From what I have read, it appears that as Santander and Barclays use the Faster Payments service, she should receive the payment almost instantly even on a Sunday.
Am I correct in my understanding?
Thanks for your help.

Yes but like all banks, Barclays are randomly holding up payments for fraud checks. For a particularly bad example involving Barclays, see https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6345256/bank-repeatedly-cancelling-money-transfer-to-a-different-bank
You could chance it, but if you are unlucky, the payment might get held up and you might not be able to speak to the fraud team on a Sunday to get the payment released. But even if they are working then, it can take hours to sort. I don't know whether Barclays would make a note on your account to let the payment go through - every time I tried this at several other banks, they said they couldn't because their fraud detection software would ignore it.
If you want to be absolutely certain that you can pay, you need to use a banker's draft or cash. You probably can't get a banker's draft now before Sunday, so it would have to be cash, which hopefully you can draw from ATMs or a Branch. Get a photo made of you handing over the cash, and get the breeder to sign that you paid.1 -
99.99% of payments transfer immediately. The Law of Sod means you could be there till Tuesday

A friend has suggested Paypal as an instatnt payment alternative - any thoughts on that?0

I don't use Paypal any longer, so don't know what their policies are on checking payments. You may be ok if you can get the money transferred into Paypal by then.
Does your breeder accept debit cards, btw? If so, that would definitely work.1 -
Could you send her a small amount now (which would be a deposit on the full payment)? That would save you having to set up the new payee on Sunday and prevent any first transaction delays happening then. There is a theoretical small risk of a second transaction being held up but it's never happened to me with any payment I've ever made.

That's what I'd do - the risk of it being declined probably isn't much different to the risk of anything going wrong (breaking down on the way for example)

Yes and no - sometimes a small initial payment, followed by a larger payment, is considered at risk of fraud, as apparently this is what fraudsters like to to. Having said this, I have used it often myself and only had one follow-on payment stopped (by Virgin Money). I think it's probably just pot luck whether the fraud detection/prevention software picks on your particular payment.SiliconChip said:Could you send her a small amount now (which would be a deposit on the full payment)? But if you do a small payment you can ensure the details are correct. I normally do this first time - if I owe £168 I might first send them £1.68 just so it ties it together (in my brain at least).

Can you set-up a new payee from your Barclays app? I bank with Santander and I cannot set-up new payees from the app, only initiate payments to existing payees; I only can do new payees on a fully grown desktop or laptop. Check that out before you try using the app.pjbennett said:I have told the breeder that I will make payment via my Barclays app to her Santander account.
Your best bet is setting-up the payee a few days in advance. The correct sort code and account number will show you the name of the account holder. Then make the payment a few days later to an already existing payee. This has also the advantage that there is less scrutiny for potential fraud. Any fraudster wants to get the transaction done immediately, the longer he waits, the greater is the chance to be found out.0 -
Are you sure? I have been setting up new payees in the Santander app for ages.bengal-stripe said:
