Vodafone price rise / Roaming

So ... just got the email from Vodafone, saying that my SIM-only contract will be going up 9.3%. I am over the 12 month contract period, and on monthly rolling, so normally at this time I would just sign up to another deal at a lower rate. In fact, in the past I have usually ended up back on the same deal, at the pre-rise rate :p

Of course, the new snag is that I tend to hit the sun 2-3 times a year, and with renewing, I will lose the inclusive roaming. Do we know if Vodafone are likely to drop ALL inclusive roaming, and start charing everyone? Even for those on contracts started over 18mths ago? Is there some sort of legal reason they can't do it?

Do you have to stay with Vodafone?

Why not switch to another provider who includes roaming as part of their package, ideally on a 30 day contract that you can move from if necessary.

Lebara and Asda both use the Vodafone network if that's important to you and they both include EU roaming as part of the deal.
  • I'm increasingly certain that the main reason for the networks implementing their price rises is actually just to make sure that people renew onto new terms and conditions every year or two so they can more easily get away with changes like these.

If you renew onto a 'new' plan, you'll be on Vodafone's latest terms sadly.

What if you are still in contract, can you leave without hefty penalties?

    No. It’s in the terms.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
  • I have caught out Vodafone trying to be sneaky with their price rise.  I only received the email yesterday 5th April.  A week before my next bill is due.   According to the terms and conditions they are suppose to give you 30 days notice before any price rise.   They were very apologetic about it and got a £15 credit added to my account.   I would check your bills as it could be seen that Vodafone breached their terms and conditions

Where in the terms does it say that 30 days notice has to be given? I only got the email yesterday with a week to my bill date…

Forgot about the notice period, but I switched out the phones with expired contracts right away.  Switched to 30 day
    rolling contracts also.

  • While we haven't been roaming in the EU since covid, we did roam quite a lot and hope to do so again once things settle down. Check carefully the T&Cs of the networks that still include "free" EU roaming, for example some only include calls back to the UK, but not to local EU numbers. Also some do not include the Channel Islands or IOM. Smarty is the one to beware of in that regard, or at least it was the last time I looked.

We are with O2, who currently offer free EU roaming on the same basis as before Brexit.

I have a Tesco contract and pay £10. per month.  No idea what their roaming charges are.

Tesco runs on O2's network & is currently free roaming in Europe.
