Off the top of my head they are also saying things along the lines of 'we hope you will decide to accept our apologies'
I have also bought off them twice before and they've covered the import duty both times. Thanks for your message.
>>>If you order from a country outside the European Union, any customs duty for import shall be payable by the consignee. The client is advised to contact with customs authorities to verity duties and any restrictions on import.<<<

Even if that text is correct and I cannot find it anywhere on their website, duty and VAT are not an import fee or additional shipping, so even that text in no way stipulates they will pay.

That does seem misleading.
It doesn't read as a very "good" translation into english. I wonder what they actually intended it to mean? If they meant what it reads as, I'd expect them to be paying the fees Fedex are chasing you for.
You might end up having to pay Fedex and chase Altra for a refund. I'd say that on the basis of that wording they should be refunding you. what your chances are of getting it back, I wouldn't like to say. Are you a good customer?
(PS - thanks for the info about the shoes. I don't think they're for me as I have a narrow foot. Mark Lewis has done a couple of video reviews of them and mentions them when he chats about his running equipment. And yes - I think he has a wide foot and like you prefers little or no drop to his shoes. He's also worn those Vibram five-toe things... )0 -

(and yeah, definitely stick with your Nikes and Asics if you've got a narrow foot! I'd love the chance to have a pair of vaporflys without my little toe going numb. And the less said about the Vibrams the better)2 -
