MOT repair: Nearside Front Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated

SKF driveshafts for my car are £90. I have got very poor at moneysaving and just pop a new one on. I don't think the joints are as good as original GKN so when the boot has gone rather than get covered in grease and worry about the state of the joint I just put a new driveshaft on. It only takes a few minutes.1

When you turn the wheel on full lock does it go click click click.
If not you don’t need a cv joint, just a new boot and grease.
At a local garage I would expect to pay between £50 - £70.
Boot £10 labour £50-£60.
If you could do it yourself get this bit of kit.
Plus get 2 cable ties, strong ones. They hold better than metal clips.

Okay, need to clarify some things. I take my car to my local garage for a service and MOT, they don't do MOT's so they take it to another nearby garage and MOT test centre, then when it's had the MOT it goes back to my local garage for the service.
Interesting point someone made about already having a tyre inspection. I explained about the puncture to my local garage when I drove it out the garage, and I would be late as needed to find a foot pump, and also told them when I dropped it off. Would a nail in a tyre (even if fully inflated) fail an MOT test? The MOT garage gave my car a "Pass with defects", the 'Nearside Front Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated', and 'child seat fitted not allowing full inspection of adult belt Nearside Rear'.
Could my garage tell the MOT garage that the puncture was going to be fixed, hence it not showing on the MOT test certificate.
I can't do car repairs so will have to pay for parts, labour and VAT
And this is the breakdown of today's bill.
Air filter £15
Cabin filter £14.50
Oil £27.50
Oil filter £10.30
Rear pads £26.65
Labour £110 + £93.95 parts = £203.95 exc VAT, VAT = £40.79.
Total £244.74 + £44 MOT = £288.74
So now the £25 tyre repair on top tomorrow morning if different garage can do, then whatever next weeks parts, labour & VAT is for the CV boot0 -
Definitely a darn screw
And a couple of amateur shots under the car, nearside, with wheel turned right. Is it the black cone thing?

Tar string thingy will do for repairing that. It is very easy to do:
Remove the screw
Clear the hole using the prodder from the kit
Insert the tar string into the "eye" of the prodder so that it is half-way through
Push the tar string into the hole in the tyre so that about 1/3 of the string (the 2 loose ends) is still showing
Turn the prodder through about 1 1/2 turns
Pull the prodder out of the hole
Using a knife cut the tar string near to the tyre
Inflate the tyre
Hey presto, puncture repaired. (It took me longer to type this out than it takes to do all but the Inflate steps above).
I used one of those kits to repair a tyre on a previous car, which got a puncture about 2 weeks after I got the car new. The tyre stayed on the car (without losing pressure) until it was replaced after about 40k miles.

General_query said:Help, got car out of garage to take for service and MOT and front right tyre was totally flat, pumped it up and drove it to the garage. Just checked the online MOT site and it's passed but showing:Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):Nearside Front Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated (6.1.7 (g) (i))
Is this major work and very costly? Garage hasn't informed me yet.
2011 Meriva B 1.7 CDTi automatic Diesel.
Thanks

Local tyre shops, not kwikfit or Halfords. Will do an on car repair of the tyre for £5 or £10.
A sticky plug as others have stated.
The cv boot has not split yet, so will be good for a week or two fingers crossed.
Your garage is quite good on parts prices, not too much mark up on them.0 -

Why are people talking about replacing a driveshaft? It’s the rubber boot (gaiter) that is worn according to the advisory, not the shaft. An hour or two labour at a Good Garage Scheme place, the (very few) parts and some grease and that’s it.Arch1

Needed to replace gaiter on my car a couple of years ago. Whole job at local garage was £80. As above I can't see any need to replace driveshaft unless it's damaged.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
