There are never any charges for incoming text messages, using any mobile network and roaming anywhere globally. So receiving OTP codes by text will cost nothing.

The above is wrong, I’ve certainly been charged for receiving text messages abroad.

Text messages over mobile networks are always free to receive. This applies to any network worldwide, roaming anywhere.
So you appear to be mistaken. Can you demonstrate how you were charged? The only possibility might be some kind of roaming package that only charges on days when there is activity.

Receiving texts overseas should not be an issue.

Some banks, however, now want you to use their app to approve payments which could be an issue if you don't have data/free WiFi available.

This week only really be an issue with online transactions not those in person.

I strongly suggest that the OPs son gets some f/x free debit and credit cards (at least 2) to take with them

Relevant advice in general. The OP mentions 'security check texts' and 'verify by sending a message or code', but my Halifax Clarity now often requires verification of an online transaction in the app, for example. This of course requires mobile data or WiFi.
Flights with local Asian airlines are now usually purchased online or in their app. We don't know what cards OP's son will use.

So what does create unexpected roaming charges when overseas ? You certainly do not have to knowingly use the phone.

No they are not, if you are using your phone abroad the cost of receiving a text is up to the network you are using abroad, it may be free, it frequently is not.

Quoting a company offering a service purporting to avoid such charges isn't really particularly helpful - it would be more meaningful if you could give examples of networks and countries that actually do result in text receiving charges being levied!

  • Some foreign networks charge their own users for incoming calls and texts. Therefore when roaming they are also charged for incoming texts.

No UK network charges for incoming texts when roaming; even using local networks that charge their own customers.

Mobile data isn't relevant either as sms are sent via network's signalling channels that that used for calls.

Not exactly a trustworthy site, given that they are using an 0845 helpline number costing up to 67p per minute, in breach of EU / UK Government regulations and also failing to comply with Ofcom regulations about the price warning.

Please identify any cellular network that charges for receiving text messages (SMS).

    From Vodafone’s website

‘If we are charged an admin fee from a foreign network operator for you to receive a text, we will pass this charge to you’

I have been in countries where I have received a text message showing charges that I would pay using my phone while in the country and those charges included paying to receive SMS text messages

Nothing definitive then. A theoretically possible 'admin fee' is not a charging tariff. In which countries have you received such texts? Do you still have them to show?
