A few bags of 10mm aggregate that is usually used for making concrete is probably your cheapest option.
Also what about a plant in a pot where it meets the garden - as well as the inexpensive aggregate.
PS. The Rolls Royce solution is to use a 38mm deep layer of washed 20mm round stone gravel as used for flat roof ballast.1
