Hi

Why is it important to a meter reading tomorrow? I'm worried my dd will go up even more. I have got my 6 monthly bill from EDF last month and I'm in debit and they wanted 186 quid from me per month.. Im got it down to 142 but it wouldnt let me go any less. I worried now that the meter reading will increase this.plus as the summer months come in I won't be using as much gas as I worn have heating on as much.

So then I think when they come to ask for meter reading in October they will see I haven't used as much and dbeing down the the dd. But then when winter comes il be using more.. Thus when march comes next year it will go back. Up againm
Thanksn

Unless you are on a fixed rate the prices change on 1st.  Do you want them to guess that reading and possibly use a lower figure so your next bill is higher than it should be ?  Your usage should only be reviewed at the appropriate time, not mid review period.

Are you on a fixed or variable tariff ?

If on a fix and you were in debt when you got your last bill then it looks like what you had been paying was not enough to cover the cost of energy you had used and  part of the new DD will be an adjustment to claw this back.

If on a variable then the  importance of reading your meter tomorrow is that the rates change on April 1st and you don't want to pay more for the period up to then do you .

You are focusing on the wrong end of the problem, if you are in debt now and you have reduced your DD below the level they suggested it is important to make sure that you have not only repaid your debt but also built up a little credit over the summer months.
If you only see a bill every 6 months you will have to do your own calculations to monitor your balance.
Can you tell us if you are on a fixed or variable tariff? (and if it is fixed, when it ends?)
Reason for asking is that if you are on a variable tariff then your tariff price is increasing in a couple of days and will increase again in October, so it is very unlikely that your DD level is going to go down when you get your next 6 monthly bill...

EDF is not only doing a bill every 6 months, they also do them in between when you give them meter readings (also not for every reading). What they only do every 6 months is a direct debit order review.

In between you are able to change the direct debit order on the web site yourself if needed.

Is it worthwhile submitting meter readings if you have smart meters?

I've not found that to be the case -  had to go through Chat to get a bill and generated a new DD.

It seems to be erratic how often they do bills. after a meter reading. Had it in February that they did a new bill after just 14 days.

Strangely I have now repeatedly received a letter asking me for a meter read sent a day or two after I submitted a new read.

As I'm having an Excel table to keep track I am not really bothered anyway.
  • I would like to also ask this question but from a different stand point. Is the reason to give a meter reading tomorrow just to lock in your bill?
It could be that could benefit or lose out depending on the estimate that companies give, so it's only recommended if you don't want the risk. i.e. if the company estimates in your favour then it could be be beneficial to not give it but you won't know until after the fact.

No - provided your smart meter is working.

If you are moving onto the SVT on April 1st or starting a new fixed deal then yes even with a smart meter it's worth sending in your reading tomorrow
