How can somewhere qualify as a "large town" and not have a supermarket?Herzlos said:The 2 large towns either side of me are 3 and 9 miles from the nearest supermarket.
I must be spolied with at least 2 large Supermarkets in walking distance and more than I'd ever bother to count within a 5 mile radius. No Morrison's though.0 -

I've a scenic glen with a river running through it within walking distance of me.

Did a 250 mile round trip yesterday just for a day out. Fuel prices won't stop me from using the car. I just eat less kebabs now.3

I can, if I wish, walk along the river to one of the Supermarkets. The route to the other is less scenic however I cut it.motorguy said:

I can't find a definitive guide on what makes a large town. These are towns that have about 1000 houses and have schools, so not isolated clusters of houses in the middle of nowhere.Grumpy_chap said:

1000 homes with, say, average 4 occupants each is 4k people. If they are all adults, that just about makes one Council Ward.Herzlos said:

The Council Ward where I live is approx 4.5k adults. Plus the associated number of children. The Village where I live comprises two Council Wards, total about 9.5k adults at the latest census. Plus children under 18.
Around 80k electorate to make a Parliamentary Constituency.
A massive stretch of the imagination to call a cluster of 1k houses as a town...0 -
Well I found this
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8322/
So a small town can be as few as 7.5k population.
Locally, promoting "village status" is advantageous as it opens up additional development funding from the LA.0 -
Both are technically villages, with populations of about 3000-3500.
Anyway, that's still a lot of people who live more than a few miles from a supermarket, which is what I think the original point was.1 -
close to where i live is a village of nearly 12000 inhabitants it whants to stay a to stay the biggest in the county

Just did some checking in our area.
The village / hamlet(?) we live on the edge of has around 300 residents.
The two closest small towns have 4,000 and 1,500 residents. They're 3 miles and 4 miles away respectively.
The nearest large supermarket (Tescos) is in the next town over from that. It has around 18,000 residents. Its about 10 miles away.
