It is REALLY annoying not to be able to compare (or, how good is my fix?)
Why is it that energy prices have become such well guarded secret? Why can't I find out what companies are charging with their SV to have an idea whether I am/will be paying too much with my fix? Now all you can find is sky high fixes, but the ordinary "standard variable tariff" is not known. For example, the standing charges seem to be varying a lot. OK, you can have a look at the cap, but they you have to work out how much it would cost me and I would probably get the maths wrong, anyway.
@Martin, is it so wrong to find out?

It is very annoying indeed. Ofgem should make all the energy companies publish all their current tariffs and not keep them a secret.

All companies are charging the same SV so I'm not sure what it would actually show? The only benefit would be to compare fixed rates with different companies but I suppose you can do that on their websites even if you can't switch to them.Andrea15 said:Why is it that energy prices have become such well guarded secret? I don't know about other suppliers as I haven't bothered looking but e.g. for EDF it is fairly easy to find. https://www.edfenergy.com/for-home/price-change & scroll down to the links
- Standard (Variable) booklet
- Standard (Variable) booklet for prepayment customers
- Deemed tariff booklet
Also, QrizB has put together a handy little post https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/78957887/#Comment_78957887;
Atm they are all up against the SVT cap anyway for any new customers even if they will allow you to join so differences are minimal.3 -
There’s nowt to compare. It’s all expensive,and this is how it will be.The Brave New World. Without the price cap,we would all be paying a hell of a lot more than now. It’s no wonder companies have gone bust if they are charging less than they have paid. No business can stand that. I’ll stick my neck out and say that you won’t see the prices we used to : Oil,Gas and coal are getting scarcer,and we have frozen Russia out,with no thought to finding replacements. The UK may not use a lot of Russian energy,but as net importers ,we are haggling on the global markets with those who do.
Get used to it.2 -
yes, but my question is "how does my fix compare"? At the moment I don't really know. I would have to phone my supplier (So Energy) who has no info on their website.mumf said:There’s nowt to compare. I had seen that post, but it still requires a lot of work from my side and very likely I would end up getting it wrong anyway.
I don't really understand why they don't make their standard tariff more readily available. Even when my fix came to an end, getting info out of my supplier was like drawing blood out a of a stone.0 -

Because they might well lose money if you choose it.Andrea15 said:I don't really understand why they don't make their standard tariff more readily available. Even when my fix came to an end, getting info out of my supplier was like drawing blood out a of a stone.1 -
Google is very often the quickest way to find this stuff, I rarely try to navigate energy company websites these days.Andrea15 said:
