Opinion On Automatic to Manual

I switched from manual to auto a few years ago as my left knee was knackered from years of rugby and constant gear change was not fun. I wish I had switched a long time ago as it makes driving so much more relaxing. I have an Octavia vRS which has the 7 speed DSG, there are flappy paddles so I could do manual changes if I want, but to be honest I have never used them. It’s plenty responsive and I have the option of various drive modes which affects the way the car responds."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein1

As others have said, avoid automated manuals (electro-magnetic clutch arrangements) at all costs. These are not true automatics. Tried and tested torque converter autos are generally reliable and comparatively easy to fix if they do go wrong, but they do tend to use more fuel than modern alternatives. Some dual clutch autos use less fuel than their manual equivalents.0

On Citroen and Peugeot vehicles you need an EAT6 or EAT8 auto box.
2015 onwards I think.
I think Vauxhall use it as well as mates Insignia has the EAT 8.

Skoda are on the road to Volvo I’d say, as makers of reliable but slightly boring cars that over time are becoming more and more desirable and starting to turn heads and become more interesting. They are migrating from solid value proposition to what could arguably be the best quality cars in some cases outside of the premium badges.2

^ I suppose they are a bit of a victim of their old reputation as eastern bloc cheapies. But the new plant (near Prague?) is reckoned to be state-of-the-art. The aged parents bought one last year and the build quality is impressive0

Skoda also make some impressive heavy horizontal milling and boring machine tools as well1

Loved old proper autos (had a Rover P5)
Had a E250 with paddles.... quite ok
just got rid of a Octavia DSG.............very slow shifts
(BTW, a DSG is 2 manual gearboxes with TWO dual mass flywheels...)2
