Car Dealer problem

Hello, a friend of mine have a problem with a car bought a week ago from a car dealer and the car dealer itself.
Long story short, he bought a car from autotrader, he meet with the car dealer at his home and bought the car.
My friend discover next day the car have some breaks issues from a mechanic.
My friend contact the dealer, he said he can come to take the car, my friend refused to give back the car because he was put a full tank of petrol and paid road tax for one year. He negociated with the dealer to cover half of the expenses of fixing. The dealer accepted the deal but never send the money.
My friend paid in total 300£ to fix the breaks issues but the car still have some small issues to sort out.
Now, the fun part begin. My friend contacted the dealer again and told him he will contact citizen advice for help to deal with this claim.
The dealer started to tell 3 different stories now. He said the car was fine and my friend was ripped of by his mechanic (not true, he have photos to demonstrate the problems). After that he said he sold the car as a private seller, not as a dealer and this is why he meet him at his home (not true either, he posted the ad on autotrader from a ltd company, ask money to be paid in his personal account and he give warranty from another company) and the last version of his story it is he was initially put the car on sale for 3250 and he cut the price down to 3000 when my friend so the car for this problems, but this is not true, he posted the car on 3250£ and reduced the price to 3000£ because nobody was buying it.
Now, the dealer said to don't bother him anymore and to fight for the money on the legal way.
What my friend is supposed to do now?
He doesen't have the address of the dealer in person but he have the address of the company that he used to provide warranty.
He can go at the police too? Because pretending to be a car dealer when you sell a car, but pretending you are a private seller when somebody ask for his rights is sound like a scam.
Most of the conversations it was happen on WhatsApp, so he have proofs of what dealer said.

Time for your friend to do some detective work and then send a letter before action before commencing small claims action for the £150 he's owed.  Only he can decide if it's worth going to the trouble for a relatively small sum.

I'd start by calling the dealer from a different number and asking if he has any other cars for sale...
  • My friend have the address from the company that dealer used to buy warranty for the car.
Now, because of all the trouble and lies, my friend doesen t want anymore to receive only half of the amount of repairs, he want the full amount now.

You said your friend met the dealer at his home so he must know his address. Did he get a receipt for the purchase?

I thought that at first, but I think OP means that the dealer went to the buyer's home.

He needs the dealer's address if he's taking him to court.

If he negotiated and agreed £150, that's what he should claim.

Hi, because your friend only bought the car last week, he is really entitled to return it for a full refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

However, since your friend took matters into his own hands and paid for repairs and a tank full of petrol, things are not quite as straightforward as they could have been.

Before thinking of taking any court action, your friend could contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline - as in the following link.

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/Views/Pages/Beta/BetaContentPageTemplate.aspx?id=33244&epslanguage=en-GB

I would also send a complaint about this car seller (I'm not even sure he is a real car dealer) to Autotrader - contact info near the bottom of the page in this link -

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/contact-us#buyer

They say you can email, call or write.  I'd be tempted to do all three!

  • Before you take action you need a bill of sale or receipt. If it was a motor trader then the full contact details should be on this. If private then just a date, price and name is that's required. If sold with warranty then that should cover any extra repairs after the sale. Do you even have any of these documents or was all through wasapp ? Without written documents I'd just eat the repair bill and resell the car.
Without complaints, there will be no progress.
    Blah Blah.

You have a lot to learn about 3rd party warranties on cars. 🤣
As the OP mentions brakes, odds on this is just wear & tear on a consumable item & will not be covered.
