Surely this can't be right?
COVID19 UPDATE: Due to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic and our inability to monitor products after they have been delivered, we are forced to temporarily cease all refunds and returns, for the safety of our customers and associates alike.

strictly speaking it’s incorrect as there are laws about your statutory rights to a refund.
sometimes things are worded badly and there’s is often a caveat like
* does not affect your statutory rights
if they want to cease goodwill returns and refunds then they are within their rights.
was there a caveat?
maybe you can post a link0 -

"Where are you based?
We are headquartered in the UK. Additionally, we have local administrative offices in Ireland, France, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa"
Site also mentions duty on deliveries meaning it comes from overseas

I want to return the item because it took too long to arrive and under the distance selling regulations I am entitled to return it if I don't open it
Correct?
Plus PayPal will pay any return postage.
In fact I got fed up waiting for the item that I ordered another from Amazon.

If you are dealing with UK law then they cannot waive your statutory rights.
however they can make things difficult in practice.
i mean look at P&O openly and brazenly breaking the law.1 -
By "temporarily ceasing" do they mean just postponing the processing of returns? Obviously many places were doing that when they had nobody on site - is it maybe an out of date message on their website and they're back to normal now?1

Doesn't really make sense as a policy either - all they'd have to do is leave packages for 3-4 days after receipt before opening them. Refunds taking a little longer due to COVID might be understandable (as it's also disrupted a lot of offices and impacted staffing densities), but they can't just blanket refuse to offer returns/refunds.
On the other hand, if it's an overseas company, then any statutory rights you had would depend on the laws in the country in question, and it could be very hard getting them enforced.0 -
They have said they can’t monitor them (which can be an excuse for avoiding statutory rights).
how can they implement what you suggest if they can’t monitor (or store) them?0
