Deceased personalised plate

You should write to DVLA including the V5C explaining who you are, relationship, date of death and so on and they would transfer "keepership" to you.
https://www.gov.uk/tell-dvla-about-bereavement/keeping-the-vehicle
Once you have the V5C (logbook) in your name, you are free to transfer the reg number from that car.

Your husbands car (now in your name) will be issued a normal, aged related reg number so you can sell it or whatever.
I would very strongly recommed the OP calls the DVLA and tell them of:
Her husband passed away.
The car registered in husband's name has a private plate, therefore, want to remove it to a retention certificate and then transfer to her car or a straight move from husband to her car which may be possible.
I'm certain they will seek evidence of death etc.
Then armed with the above info the OP can proceed without compromising the value of the car, IE having one extra owner when it did not need one. The car could easily be sold with evidence of the husband's death certificate/probate papers copy etc.
Apologies if I have confused anyone but the best way forward is to contact the DVLA they are very help and will save you devaluing your husband's car as I am guessing it is worth a bit of money.0 -
There is a proceedure for allocating a number plate to the Executor, or other beneficiary.

But it really is just easiest to register the car in your name to deal with it.1 -
I transferred the car to my name after my husband died.
When I traded it in I explained that that was why it was a three owner car rather than two.
The salesman told me it didn't matter.1 -
Fair enough. Silly question without looking up Google. This thread made me think as we have everything in joint names bar the cars. Our money is 50/50. Therefore can you have two names on the log book?0

All the legislation seems to refer to a/the 'person', not person(s).
However, as a general principle a 'person' can include a 'body corporate', hence lots of cars are registered to companies. So, you could set up a business (maybe 'diystarter7 and wife Ltd?').
Probably not worth the bother.0 -
@Car_54
Thanks, may think about it on the next car/s.0 -
But the V5 does not prove ownership. Only who is the keeper.
A receipt for purchase in joint names would be more appropriate.0 -
You are right but this is more of a case about getting the private reg of the husband's car.0
-
But it is easy to remove the private reg. Complete a form online and press the button- done.
Even if it was joint names it would be a change of keeper to remove one name, so it became one keeper instead of joint.0 -
