Car incorrectly registered ?

We have more than our fair share of boy racers tearing around the streets (particularly in the wee small hours) - largely, I ignore them.
Last night, however, one idiot in a suped up Peugeot 205 was sitting outside our house at 3 am revving his engine, dropping his clutch and spinning his wheels repeatedy
I got his reg number and purely out of interest - put it in to vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk - which told me that it was 1124cc and was taxed (£170 pa) and MOT'd as that size....
This car has twin exhausts and is way too quick for a 1124cc - which got me wondering - if someone has upgraded their engine - should be taxed at the same level as previous or should it be registered at increased cost ?
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Daughters Picanto 998cc has twin exhausts. As do many cars. Often one is just a fake one to balance to look of the car.Life in the slow lane1

Newer cars (2017?) pay the same, regardless of engine size.
Older ones pay on emissions, not engine size.1 -
This Peugeot is fast and definitely non standardborn_again said:Daughters Picanto 998cc has twin exhausts. As do many cars. Often one is just a fake one to balance to look of the car
I reckon that it has nitrous at least
It spits out flames and is extremely noisy

Which likely means it doesn't have valid insurance if it's been modified and the insurer hasn't been informed.MouldyOldDough said:

Based on what? Earlier this week you weren't sure how many spark plugs your own car had.MouldyOldDough said:

There are a lot of cars that have been modified/chipped without the insurance companies being told so this one is probably no different. Not much good moaning about it on here - tell the fuzz if you are concerned.

I remember spinning the wheels with a sub 1L engine and just 38bhp. Many owners and much neglect so it
probably had less than 38bhp. It was like a whippet off the line though.
So can you hear the nitrous kick in or can you smell it?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If it's had the engine swapped but hasn't had the record updated then it's illegal and probably not insured correctly. I assume changing the engine would impact the tax, though.
However I doubt there's any way to tell from a distance, as it could just be highly modified (legal if it was insured correctly). It's not a heavy car so it may seem pretty fast anyway. It's unlikely to have nitrous, even if it has a sticker on the back (much cheaper than actually fitting it).
If it's excessively loud and behaviour anti-socially by deliberately making noise at 3am that's already illegal and something to raise with the police, who may inspect the car to see if the modifications are registered.

Where do you register modifications?Herzlos said:If it's had the engine swapped but hasn't had the record updated then it's illegal and probably not insured correctly. I assume changing the engine would impact the tax, though.
