Hiya I was the original OP. Yes my solicitor accepted the bus pass. Good luck.aliceegordon said:Hi, I appreciate this was a little while ago but I'm in the same position now with my Grandmother re. gifted deposit. She has an Older Person's Bus Pass (it says on it Concessionary Travel funded by HM Government) - would that work?

Maybe the government could ask if some people would like an identity card, I know there would be uproar if everyone was told they had to have one but an optional choice is something I’d jump at, since I don’t drive and my passport is about to run out. I’ve used that as an option for the past 30 years but will be without after next month and I’m not sure if I will be travelling abroad this year, so am inclined to leave paying for a new one at present, since the next one I get will no doubt be the last one I will need 70 soon so not feeling I will want to renew at 80! I needed the passport this week when buying a new iPad and changing my phone/broadband contract. Phone shop said only a valid, current passport would do, not an old one. I did mention my Freedom pass but was told no.Paddle No 21:wave:0

But a passport is always an option? And you don't need to drive to get a licence. I don't see the point in setting up some sort of additional system - why would that be any cheaper than the existing options?GibbsRule_No3. said:Maybe the government could ask if some people would like an identity card, I know there would be uproar if everyone was told they had to have one but an optional choice is something I’d jump at, since I don’t drive and my passport is about to run out.2 -
there should be another way to verify ID as some people don't have a driving licence and if you don't travel abroad, it is silly to pay for a passport simply to use for ID verification!GibbsRule_No3. said:Maybe the government could ask if some people would like an identity card, I know there would be uproar if everyone was told they had to have one but an optional choice is something I’d jump at, since I don’t drive and my passport is about to run out. a government issued ID card would probably cost as much as a passport though so you may as well have the benefit of a passport.
maybe councils could issue ID cards for election and that can be used as ID, or they give the option for you to buy an ID card. I think they may be able to do it cheaper than a government ID card because councils already have a lot of details on you through your council tax and voting register.0 -
Granted if the ID card is as much as a Passport then yes, I’d opt for the passport but surely an internal country ID should be less? I don’t pay much for my Freedom pass and that was an option for the last London Mayoral election but not for my EE or Apple purchase. £20 or £30 for a ten year ID card and I’ll buy one rather than nearly £80 for a passport. No idea what one will cost if I have to renew at 80. This time I am sure I will, in a few months renew my passport, as I will probably go to the US before my 80th maybe not this year but not sure I’ll want to travel after 80 (if I get there!).Paddle No 21:wave:0

It's only £34 for a driving licence.GibbsRule_No3. said:Granted if the ID card is as much as a Passport then yes, I’d opt for the passport but surely an internal country ID should be less? When I get to 80 then I will opt for a driving licence, assume they go up at the same rate as the Passport will.user1977 said:

at that age, getting a provisional driving licence may not be an option. driving licence applications are not valid for anyone with an ill health condition that stops them driving.GibbsRule_No3. said:
