Are Virgin overcharging me for leaving them

I gave Virgin plenty of notice that i was leaving, they even tried 'we will match your new deal'.  I wanted to change and went to Sky.  i left Virgin on the 21/22nd of February and then find i have been charged my £44 monthly rate on 10th March.  Having phone them (and a lady obviously reading the details from the computer screen) i really didnt get anywhere.  I had a letter before all this saying that the costs were going up and that if i wanted to leave before the end of March i would not be given a cancellation fee.  Now knowing that any business always charges you before the usage i cannot understand why i was charged effectively after useage.  I was told that the £44 was for usage between 19th February and 18th March.  Sky have charged me for my monthly usage before i use it so was is Virgin different.   I did ask to speak to a supervisor but what a surprise no one there!  Any comments on what i can do would be helpful.

If you want to leave under a 30 day cancellation window because of a price change you need to tell them so, not just pick another provider and sign up which sounds like what might have happened here.

Also of course moving from Virgin to Sky (or any other BT provider) doesn't cancel your services.  You need to do that.
