Money Moral Dilemma: I bought a friend gig tickets as a gift - should they have invited me?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

I bought two concert tickets for a friend as a birthday gift, but they took another friend to the gig. As it was a present, was my friend free to take whoever they want, or should they have invited me?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't answer Money Moral Dilemma questions as contributions are emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be a point of debate and discussed at face value. Remember that behind each dilemma there is a real person so, as the forum rules say, please keep it kind and keep it clean.

If you wanted to go, the present should have been inviting them to come with you.

No dilemma that I can see here - if you'd wanted to go with them you should either have just given them one of the two, or bought three and kept one for yourself (which they perhaps may have even presumed you had done when they invited someone else).

I have a feeling that I've seen this 'dilemma' before.

It's not even a dilemma, as there's nothing you could have done.

As theoretica says above, if you wanted to go then you should have bought two tickets, kept one yourself and asked your friend to join you.

Maybe your friend thought you didn't like/want to go to the event so invited someone else.

Whatever the reason, your friend received a gift from you. That was then their property and they used it as they thought fit. I think that friend was thoughtless but you didn't make your intentions clear when you gave them two tickets.

You can either accept and move on, or not accept and ditch this 'friend'. Personally, I could live without someone who did that kind of thing in my life but that's solely my own opinion.

The same question was asked only 2 months ago.  I don't suppose the answers have changed since then....

Perhaps someone could just copy and paste the answers from the last time this was posted, two months ago.

Of course not, you gave them two tickets as a gift, they could take whoever they wanted.

It's a gift, they're free to do with it as they please.

Gifts are by virtue selfless, without caveats. If the recipient had chosen to sell them for half their face value, it is their choice.
