EDF court proceedings

Options
Can anyone offer advice?  We moved from EDF as they did not take our direct debit on the date they should have leaving us having to change our plans at christmas. We have paid them £100 of the £500 we owe them, but we raised a complaint that they have now closed without giving us a reason. I have spoken more than 6 times with their customer services who each told me they would call back, but they didnt! I did an online chat and kept the transcript and I have emailed them. Each time with no response. They have today sent me a letter saying they will take me to court for the outstanding amount because I have not responded to them. I tried calling and texting them today. The phone lines say they are too busy to answer calls, and text has had no response. What else can I do? Thank you

    Pay them the £400?
  • I cant afford that !!! I told them I could pay £50 by standing order but they did nothing about it and told me someone would contact me.. . They didn't!!!

  • I wrote to them on 8th March and got no response apart from this letter today saying I had not been in touch

Make a formal written request for a payment plan.  What are your kWh rates and daily charges?
  • We moved from them as they were way more than EON for KWh rate, but they told me we owed £19 on 6th December,  but took a £290 payment on 15th December.  We changed on 1st January to EON expecting to get money back, but they said we owed over £600. We have paid 2 lots of £50 without prompting, but to get this letter and being told we have not been in contact is wrong  I have the evidence!!

Were you on a tariff that billed every 6 months ?   Some of the online accounts can be very confusing - they shadow any credit./debit balance plus DD's but not the cost of energy used until such time as a bill is produced. That £16 and the £290 could both be correct.

A bit confused when you say "they said"  - did you not get a final bill from EDF ?  I am surprised that they didn't block the transfer.

Do you still have access to the online account ?   What do the bills say ?  Download them .

    As others have said write
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I'm surprised that EDF allowed you to leave if you owe them £400, but EDF move in mysterious ways (and I say that as an EDF customer).
We moved from them as they were way more than EON for KWh rate
That sounds unlikely. What was your tariff with EDF? What is your new tariff with E.ON?

I'm struggling to understand how the failure of a company to take a direct debit on the expected date would lead to you having to change your plans for Christmas, and indeed everything that follows on from that.
