Is this a railway car park?
Have they called this a penalty ?
Have they mentioned Bye law 14?
Has the drivers identity been disclosed ?( if it has dont worry - if not do not even attempt to guess the id)
When you say didnt put a 1 on was this typed as an I or an l or just completely missed?

If they have called it a penalty and/or mentioned by law 14 Have you also posted this on a railway forums such as here : https://www.railforums.co.uk/forums/disputes-prosecutions.152/  - note do not give any hints as to the drivers id

While they should, they deal with hundreds of parking charges from hundreds of car parks across the country. This is parking ticket farming on an industrial scale.

Did you know that some 22,000 tickets a day are issued by the private parking sector, that's more than 8 million a year?
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

Have they called this a penalty ? I dont think so it says "parking notice"

When you say didnt put a 1 on was this typed as an I or an l or just completely missed? Yes so my reg is for example AT146TG and the ticket I bought says AT46TG so the 1 was just not inputted at all. Obviously 14 stands for 2014 which was the registeration year of the car x

Oh gosh thank you what a nightmare for parking I paid for - so unfair why dont they check their systems to see if cars regs are similar / missed a digit. shall I send this to that email address? Do I give them my new address?

    Dear APCOA,

I am writing this e-mail to inform you that you currently hold an incorrect address on your file: xxx I would like this address and associated data erased and for you to inform your agents and sub-contractors of the same.

    My new address is: xxxxx

    dpo@apcoa.com

    <Old Address here>
Yep, send that by e-mail to dpo@apcoa.com and in the subject line put Data Rectification Notice.

Whos' to say that you didnt push the number 1 button, another way of looking at it is that you did but it didnt register ?
I type stuff on a keyboard, i can spell but sometimes the keyboard doesnt register the imput or i hit thw worng button, or the right ones  in the wrong order.

ANPR when paired with Payment machines should reject any keying errors when the vehicle is on site - some systems do this and even show a picture of the vehicle numberplate when entering the site .

something like this for an idea only :
     "To whom it may concern...
A payment ticket was purchased for the parking period ( if you have evidence then add it) however it would appear that your systems have failed as the vehicle was on site at the time and if the registration number was incomplete or incorrect then your machines/ANPR systems should have alerted the person using it to this fact.
As i have provided evidence a ticket was paid for, and that your systems were faulty in accepting payment with an incorrect / minor error in registering the number plate you must now cancel this erroneous parking charge notice.
I do not appreciate having my time wasted by your incompetence and faulty systems, as this is causing undue stress and worry.

As a gesture of goodwill i will be willing to forgo any claims against you for my time wasted in dealing with this and for any stress and worry that it has caused, i hope i have made the position clear on this and i look forward to your reply, apology and confirmation that this will not happen again"

How to appeal using their system is on the back of the letter you showed us.
