Booking.com (carrentalsusa.com) car rental nightmare

Avis would not honour my booking and let me rent the car at LAX. They said it could not be amended ansd it was too late to cancel with a refund on the Booking.com app. This meant I had to pay the last minute counter price which was far more expensive. I have requested a full refund plus compensation for the additional cost, stress and hassle incurred but have so far been denied. I have been a loyal customer for over 8 years and have level 3 genius so I expect this to be resolved quickly and satisfactorily. I am now out of pocket for £123.20 paid upfront plus the cost at the Avis counter was over double. Please can anyone help??? I've never had major issues with Booking.com like this before? Does anyone know who the Ombudsman and regulator for Booking.com is? Thanks.

    Why would Avis not honour your booking when you went to collect the car?

    Was it something to do with your payment card or driving licence? 

    There is no ombudsman for this online, overseas based travel seller.
