now just checked my portable Pure DAB radio - plugged in using 12v power block but not switched on.

    0.12kwh per 24 hrs

about £20 a year at april price cap rates - will def be switching off at plug when not listening
After Avro went under I started turning everything not in use off at the wall socket, or it it was plugged into a surge protector with individual switches the appliance would be turned off and if nothing on the surge protector was running I also turn off the surge protector.

There are only three appliances I leave on 24/7 and they are the fridge, freezer and router everything else is turned off at the socket.

It's out!!!    And the only bare terminals are those that seat into the battery pack and are well "inside" the recess, so unlikely to ever touch them, even when carrying it.

So we'll see how it goes, if it becomes a hassle (for any reason) or we have a power cut, i'll pop it back.  (it had 30% on it before I took it out).

And yes, I did power down the laptop properly before I removed it!!!    I'm blonde, but I'm not THAT blonde!!!

ETA - it appears to be drawing 20w, whilst in use.
Bear in mind that if there is a power cut you would lose any unsaved work, which wouldn't happen if the battery were in.

Divide the number of appliances running by the SC, Then you can get an accurate price of what each appliance uses per day if you include a portion of the SC in the daily usage.

In my case there's the fridge, freezer, router, cooker and desktop PC's and once per week there's the washer and dryer, occasionally there's the TV and AV system with the Xbox or PS4.
Don't expect the SC to decrease when OFGEM has got the money back it paid out because of failed suppliers of the 11p per day for the £200 loan,Once they increase the prices  they are here to stay in the main.

1 minute 15 secs total, and much less water used too. no waste of both water and very expensive electricity (30 p kwh ) I'm quite happy  with that. Cost per shower 1.5 p at a rough estimate.
Far too rough, I'm afraid. Electricity at 8kW costs £2.40 per hour (4.00p per minute) so the cost was was 5.00p + water.
If your gas costs 7.5p/kWh and your boiler is 90% efficient then you'd need 8.89kW (1.11p per min) so the cost would be 1.39p + water.
That doesn't allow for the small amount of heat loss from the hot tank, but can be neglected assuming you have gas DHW anyway.
Thanks, pretty crap maths from me . 5 p is still good though and way better than the usual 10 min shower at 40 p + water .
Those who stand there being blasted by a power shower for 20 mins are paying  through the nose at 80 p. plus water .Maybe the on /off shower tip is the biggest saving to be made for those keen on economising.
I reckon I can get it down to under 1 minute shower use as I overdid the final rinse off .
Can anyone beat the 60 second shower?
Electric showers go up to 12 kw so the £1 + shower is on  for those who take more than  15 mins .

mine draws about 20W too. My desktop plus screen draws 70W for comparison

Measured my overnight consumption last night, 70w an hour between midnight and 7am.
    Fridge, freezer and router.
My overnight usage is between 0.02 and 0.04 kWh per hour between 20.45 and 06.55. This is the usage of the fridge, freezer and router.

I think we have now officially entered obsessive power saving.

Have you checked the power use of the laptop power supply when laptop is off?
Or do you turn that off at the mains?

If it is a 10 years old laptop, the charger may be a big old inefficient power brick wasting power all the time!

I always turn off the power at the mains when I switch it off...unless I specifically wanted to charge it.

Obsessive... probably...but I'd rather my pennies stay in my pocket than Eon's!!

I realise I run the risk of a power cut...but we very rarely get them here.  But it would only affect my "off-line" spreadsheet stuff, as anything on line would fail anyway, if the power to the router went!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

you can measure your obsessiveness in monetary terms

every 1W background saving saves you about £2.50 a year @28p a unit - maybe nearer £4 a year come October

    (calculation: 8760 x 0.28/1000)

From 20th April when our new fix starts (Next V12), we'll be 32.8p a unit. (We took a punt!)

    So 8760 x .328/1000 = £2.87

Maybe enough to buy a cheap sliced loaf by this time next year!!! 😉😉😱
