last minute.com extra charge after booking

My son booked 2 flights to Bangkok in April through lastminute.com. He recieved an email confirming his booking but it WASNT a confirmation email (we’ve only just seen it says pending confirmation).  They’ve just rung and said they want an extra £54 as the flights have gone up? Is this usual practice? Is this something they could keep doing? I thought he should have cancelled and booked direct through the airline but he’s paid the extra now.
We’re bit concerned , they could ask for more money again?  Do the same with the return flight?  Or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Airlines and tour operators can charge extra after the initial payment for such things as increased fuel costs.

Many third parties like Lastminute do not have live availability or pricing
Your son will have made a 'booking request' to see if they were able to get him tickets for the advertised (non-live) price and he would have received a confirmation of his request. They would then make a reservation but ticket would not be issued until the full price is paid.
When the fare is not available the third party would contact to advise the price they can get the ticket for. Once the airline have been paid in full and a ticket is issued there should be no further changes

That’s great thanks. We asked when the ticket would be paid for and issued and the agent who rang didn’t know, is it likely to be in the next week or so or nearer to when he travels?
