Yes if it were a bog-standard figure of 8 cable, it would be very cheap to just buy another. If it is the computer end, then a more expensive buy
But still relatively cheap, in my experience (assuming you don't insist that it has to be the original manufacturer's part)/
Depends on make.   Some use standard kettle leads (not the one in the picture, one with an earth too), some use somthing which is more or less the same but with a custom plug at the power-brick end, and some don't have a detachable power lead at all.

Hi everyone - thanks for the replies.

The part in question is the prong that goes in to the laptop, not the plug itself. I’ve found a similar after market one online, but as the laptop is relatively new it’s pretty expensive.

I’ve asked my relative the name of the place they bought it from, and hopefully they’ll be more help.

Can you show a picture of the damage?

Trying to prove a broken plug that is constantly used is not user damage is going to be very difficult unless you have a materials scientist in the family.

    Good luck.

Which has what to do with the OP?

Within 6 months it's taken the goods do not conform unless demonstrated otherwise so it's the retailer that would need the scientist  ;)

Should be easy enough for the retailer to do should they wish. Certainly sounds like customer error.
If the lead with the plug isn't generic, just cut the plug off and wire into a new plug.
The Consumer Rights Board sure is an interesting place, when the OP needs to do something it takes a scientist when the retailer needs to do the same thing it's easy peasy, lemon squeezy :|

Sums up the general atmosphere here really.

    Which brand of laptop?
As some charging points are so feeble & given that they get hot while charging are easy to break if not pulled straight out, any sort of angle will simply ben the pin.
I will only buy a laptop that uses a USB C to charge.

I never said it would take a scientist. The retailer could easily send it back to the manfacturer for a report.

It had been unplugged, which is why I was so surprised. The owner of the laptop is definitely not the type to be rough with it. They're the type to leave the plastic on electronics so they don't get scratched!

For the other poster that asked for a picture - I'll see if I can get one to you soon. It genuinely snapped clean in half. I'm absolutely baffled as to how it happened. It's metal as well so I don't really understand how they can class it as customer damage - I'm not even sure you could get such a clean break with a saw!

A family member of mine was given a laptop for Christmas (2021). Earlier today when they went to plug it in to charge, the prong of the charger completely snapped off.
Most chargers these days are USB C other than the most budget laptops which are most likely to be a bipole plug like:

If its 65W or less then it should be under £20 to buy a replacement and whilst you can spend 5 days arguing it the retailer should replace it or not sometimes you need to weigh up cost/benefit

    Hello!

You do have consumer rights and Citizens Advice can help you with them.

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/our-work/citizens-advice-consumer-work/the-consumer-rights-act-2015/

If all else fails, you can cheaply and easily get a whole replacement cable for a reasonable price. Last year I paid £9.99 for a new charger cable for my Packard Bell Easy Note TE series laptop from eBay - that is the plug that goes into the wall socket as well as the plug that goes into the laptop - it dismantles just in case you don't need both cables. It isn't a Packard Bell one but I've had it 12 months now and it still works like a dream.

They had the identical cable on amazon for twice the price. I've just checked eBay today and the cable I bought is now £10.99 but that's still reasonable. Better than my having to buy a new laptop, anyway.

I wouldn't be cutting any plug off, btw.

I bought one last year, it's not expensive.
