There is an online petition "Reduce fuel duty and VAT by 40% for a period of 2 years"
This can be found on the RAC website. It needs 100,000 signatures to be debated in Parliament and currently has 86,000 or thereabouts

I can't see it happening, they've brexit, covid and the Russian conflict to pay for. Talk of petrol being £2-50 a litre this morning. Boris isn't going to miss the opportunity to tax the working person.2

A lot of these petitions seem to me to be ill-thought-out. Don't get me wrong, as a motorist who has little choice but to use a car, due to living in a rural location with little to no public transport, I hate the current price of petrol as much as anyone else. Hopefully things are showing some signs of easing on that front - fingers crossed. And yes, the motorist is often seen as an "easy target" for taxation. But the government gets millions (billions?) in revenue from fuel duty. If it takes a 40% cut on that income, where is the shortfall going to come from? I don't know the figures, but I'm willing to bet that the whole Covid thing has cost a pretty penny, and that's got to be repaid somehow, on top of all the usual spending.Of course I'd like to pay zero tax, wouldn't we all. But realistically, "running the country" has to be paid for.Not meaning to argue with you - but it's worthing sparing a few minutes to think through the wider implications of things like this, rather than just giving a knee-jerk reaction to the headline statement.Discuss .......

Exactly. The Treasury is really hurting at the moment so the last thing they'll be considering is a lowering of taxes.
They weren't even considering doing anything to help with energy costs, except for loaning people a small amount of money to pay back later.

Who pays for the cost of this proposal ?3

TBH the rise in fuel costs doesnt really effect me as I only ever put in £205

All it will create if it meets the criteria is another load of hot air in London. Of course debating is one thing, actually getting anything done is another matter.
Personally despite having a car. I would rather action on the gas/electric rip off standing charges that come in 01-04.Life in the slow lane1 -
Ridiculous.....Think Brexit, Covid, Furlough, Ukraine, N.H.S. waiting lists...........Being cynical I guess the RAC will get some free advertising from something they dont actually believe in. This was probably the purpose of the petition anyway as it is nonsense.

And what tax are you proposing to increase to compensate?Murphybear said:There is an online petition "Reduce fuel duty and VAT by 40% for a period of 2 years"

Surely Gas or Electric that impacts more people is a more worthy consideration if you think we should just borrow more especially given the impact is proportionally greater on the vulnerable0 -
I note oil yet again has dropped in price today.Would be much better if the government were to make the suppliers reduce their prices with as much speed as they raise them.I know - I must remember to take my medication
