Recommended places to visit in Rome?

Can anyone recommend places to go and see/visit in Rome? We are going for 3 days and obviously as time is limited we would like to make th4e most of our visit?

Also, does anyone have advice on places to go to eat out during the day or evening?

We would also welcome any money saving tips for the trip?!?!?!

Thanks

    Hi again bee

Where to visit in Rome ....... the list is endless

the trevi fountain , the vatican , the pantheon, spanish steps, and of course the colosseum , palatino , piazza navonna , villa borghese ,

Be careful round the vatican and the train station as there a lot of pickpockets / bag snatchers etc

have a look at this website - www.enjoyrome.com

will try to post more later,

Ps , i hope this is after twickenham;)

We found that if you go to McDonalds and ignore the usual stuff and ask for a 250gm burger you get this gigantic freshly made beefburger in a ciabatta roll with salad and mayo, have this with fries and a large cup of tea ( heaven, in the land of coffee) and you will be stuffed for hours.
You can book coach day trips that will show you a lot more than you could manage on foot. Comfortable shoes are a must, my blisters had blisters!
Taxi drivers are the biggest con artists going. You can buy a travel pass that you can use on trains and buses.
If I can think of more i'll post later.
I want to go back now. Boo hoo.

Personally I'd suggest the Facsist Colloseum if you're after something a bit different. I went with my GF who studied Nazism as part of her degree so had to go, but I was quite struck by the imposing nature of the building.

No offense Wolf but suggesting McD's in Rome???

Hey Fatboy, op did say they would welcome any money saving tips. Have you ever eaten in one of those glass enclosed restaurants you find in the streets ? For someone on a budget you'll have just blown it on one meal! It was the tea I was after! Ha Ha.

Having gone to Rome last September, I can fully understand being recommended McDonalds as a Moneysavingtip, as it's the only place in the Pantheon area which is actually reasonable for something to drink or eat! We got stung near the Trevi Fountain, something like 2 ice creams and 2 budweisers=£20! Ironic as we were checking the menu's and prices for everywhere else but this one place!

Get hold of a good book such as the DK Guide to Rome and work your way round. We were there for 4 days and saw everything within 3. You'll have a great time.

We went last month, found a nice place for lunch just north of the Pantheon for about 7 euros. At night we ate near the Trevi fountain and felt we had good value. We got huge icecreams from a shop near the fountain for about a euro or 1.20 euros.
We managed to do the spanish steps, via condotti pantheon and piazza navona then walked to look at St Peters suare all in one day...then we hopped on a bus and did the Colloseum too. Because we did so much that day it allowed us to go off to Ostia Antica the following day- after going to the market at Campo de Fiori first.
If you get a 4 euro ticket from the metro or tobacconist you can travel anywhere for one day and so we took a metro to Pyramide then a train to Ostia Antica which is an old roman town near the coast. Don't eat there, the food was rubbish. If we'd had the energy we would have gone on to the Lido before travelling back but we were worn out!

ooh rome - i'm jealous! i went for the first time last year and would love to go back! my favourites - spanish steps, trevi fountain and the vatican. though the vatican does take all day if you see everything - st peters, vatican galleries etc. we actually found eating out quite cheap - like any city there are lots of expensive places where you don't get much for your money (in quantity or quality!), but if you wander onto the side streets or try some of the smaller bakery type places you can find some cheaper options. have a great time!

The best thing I did as I only had 2 days was buy a bus tour ticket that lets you go around all the major sights of rome and lets you hop on and off all day..We stayed on for the full tour then got off had lunch then got back on and got off at the places we wanted to see...I thought it was well worth it....The buses depart from the train station..
  • Thanks to everyone, thats all really helpful!!

I am going with my sister and parents. My dad is 79 so I am thinking we will be taking transport everywhere we go as he can't walk too far. I think the bus tour sounds like perfect!

I do have another questions though, any advice on how to get from Ciampino Airport to the Colloseum area at about 1am in the morning (our flight lands at midnight)? Not keen on getting the train (if it still goes at that time).

    Thanks again

Use Stephano, he was brilliant email me for info if you want it, costs about 45 euros, good value for 4 of you, otherwise get ryanair bus -terravision I think - at about 9 euros to station then get a taxi. There was another bus waiting at the airport too which was about 6 euros, I think you just paid as you got on that one
